Help, plumbers and DIYer's - pulling a flush mount sink?

I am fixing up the kitchen for the new renter (ugh!) besides painting the cabinets (double ugh!) the thirty something year old sink is very tired. So out it comes, it is a flush mount with a stainless steel ring and little tabs screwed in around the perimeter underneath holding the sink in. If I unscrew those tabs will the sink fall on my head?

TIA

No. The sink is resting on the countertop. Unscrew the tabs, turn them 90 degrees, and pull the sink out from above.

No, there should be a rim above or below the tile/countertop. But if it does fall on your head, diregard this reply.

Funny, my dad is helping me and he installed the bugger but can't remember... he is pushing the big eight zero so I can't get mad at him.

A picture would help, but if the "stainless steel ring" you describe is what I think it is, it provides the lip that is larger than the hole in the counter-top. The sink will drop out from below if you remove the screws and clips; the "ring" will be removed from the top. The clips force the sink up to the "ring" -- loosening the clips allow the sink to drop down.
