stump grinders.....

last weekend we had a 40ft pine take a beating in a windy storm which cracked it's base, had a pretty heavy lean to it so i called my landlord (renting) and called his buddy in the business to handle it, i didn't get a chance to snap some pics of the pine.....but you can see it's stump in the back of the vid....
however there has been a giant stump (about 10ft thick) which was cut flush with the ground which would ALWAYS bite me when cutting the grass......ask and ye shall recieve, the stump grinder showed up today

plus it provided me with quite a bit of mulch for around the house which i was going to need to buy

The same machine used here when I hired an arborist to get rid of a "danger" tree. It sure looked like a workout machine to me!

We've had a couple of stumps ground. Those things make a huge mess. And yes, when you get done you have a bunch of mulch.

Stump grinders around here are called Carlos, Jose and Jaun - clear the way with Jefe and include lunch and agua.

You'll most likely find that spot in the yard a little "soft" for the next couple of years as the remaining part of the stump decomposes back into the ground. Will probably take at least a season or two before you can grow healthy lawn there too, due to the decomp of the stump.

I had a stump ground over a year ago and the grass still doesn't grow well in that area. I should have limed it.

I had a 4 1/2' oak taken down quite a few years ago, and the ground stump area still hasn't recovered. I usually lime, but haven't paid any particular attention to that area...will lime still help?

I'm not 100% sure since this was just the grinder guys advice. He said that the decaying wood would lower the ph below what grass likes, and that lime would help neutralize it.

My zoysia should have between 6 and 7 ph. You may want to buy a ph tester. $20 here.
