Sadly, there are few living authors who can apply his level of scholarship to a topic. Sadder still, the declining number of people who aspire to reading and learning.

And the impact of that truth on democracy and the democratic process. Not meaning to indict those who choose not to become informed or who are naturally incurious, (unless they somehow become President), but democracy does not work with an uninformed populace. Shady leaders can sell us anything they wish if we have no grasp of world events or even recent history that would presage the result of such policy. Sad indeed. :(
