Selling a car on consignment.

Anyone ever sold a car on consignment?

I am trying to sell my 1982 SC targa, and I'm pretty discouraged given the market for targas. I was thinking of going to a local 'exotic car' dealer (Park Place Limited, Bellevue, WA) and seeing about having them sell it on consignment. They seem to get absurd prices for their cars. They have an SC on their lot right now for $19,500.

Buyers are strange animals. They seem to think that a used car bought from a used car dealer seems to be "better" or "safer" than a car bought from an individual and are willing to pay a premium for this.

Your car is beautiful, and your asking price is very reasonable. Talking with the people at Park Place is a good idea, to gather info and think about it. They have high visibility and they get a lot of traffic, and you wouldn't have to deal with the no-shows and thieves and worse. They'll probably ask how flexible you are on price, which may be worth considering, but your asking price is very reasonable. And if your car doesn't get many offers, ideally you should be able to bring it home without penalty.

You've probably seen the local PCA listings:

Is that the red one? Take a good, close look at it. Last time I saw it, it was pretty trashed. Had obviously been hit, nonworking sunroof being held in with a wedge, headliner falling down, engine cover didn't line up....bondo or something...

The pretty "cream yellow" targe has rust bubbles under the paint...looks liek it's been sold.

It's been advised to me never to buy a [used] car from them, by several different people.

I'd talk to I-5 motors., where I bought mine. Although they miffed me just a bit, they were good people. Just be sure you give them EXPLICIT instructions to pass on the paperwork, as I'm sure you would do. Put it in the CONTRACT, and keep copies.
