Anyone use XCopy for making DVD back-ups? If so, how do/did you like it?

I do... I like it.. Only issue is you had to get the unlocking serial # from their site and who knows if that's still available when you want to resintall... (because that version was ruled illegal).

So far I could copy everything I threw at it, no muss, no fuss... 1 failure in 10 due to media type !

I bought after the ruling, but that' s almost a year ago. You can fin d it on ebay but I wonder about activation, like I said...

You can buy the NEW version but that one requires that you go on the web and "import" a DVD protection algorithm cracker yourself (cough cough) to run it with the software you bought ! Strange loophole !

I use DVD Encryptor to rip the content.
Then DVD Shrink to compress and burn the disc.

Never had a problem or met a DVD I couldn't back-up.

Games are a different story - much more difficult to make backups that work on different computers.

All valid - but the beauty of DVD X copy was simplicity. Pop it in, pick what language track you want, walk away... Decode and copy on the fly, high success ratio.... Great for the masses ;-)

Anyone have a old copy they would sell? Was not into making backups of my stuff when they were selling Xcopy and did not get one!

I bought the link off of Ebay as mentioned above. It works perfefctly. No issue at all with installing and registering the software.

I think I got it for $10. Check them out. If you can't find them on Ebay, send me a PM and I'll dig up the guys email addy.

Got a copy of X-copy now and have a question. Have burned loads of CD's but no experience DVD's.

When making a copy of a DVD do you have to use a +R, -R or does it matter? Tried to make a copy this morning using a blank -R DVD and it did not want to work. Wondering if I have to have a +R disk?

Anyone have any experience with this?

It depends on your burner. Your burner will either be -R, +R, or both. Your DVDs have to be compatible with your burner.

I have a Sony DRU-710A that is DVD+R double layer, and DVD +/-R single layer, and for some reason it would not recognize nor write on the -R disk...

Oh well, off to Fry's to get some +R and see if that works!

I really depends who/what you are burning for, and what flavor your target DVD player prefers... Mine hates +R and I've been burning -R only, and then again only a specific brand ! Some work better than others and given the cost of media you want t experiment to increase your odds ;-) Once you got a good combo it's a 95% thing!

Switched settings inside X-Copy and it works fine now with -R disks. Still going to pick up some +R disks and see how they work.

My big deal is that I wanted to make some backup copies of movies. This way when someone drops the disk and scratches it I do not lose a movie, just make another copy and keep the orginal safe and sound somewhere... Have done this with music CD's for years (one copy for the house, one for the car) and keeps me from buying the same CD over and over again as they get scratched or stolen out of the car.

Updating an old thread.

Have for several years used 321Studios DVD Xcopy to backup my DVD's for use when I travel.

Tried it for a few days on my new Casino Royale DVD and it keeps popping up with an error and closes the program.

Anyone else had this problem?

Yes, the newer DVDs have "fake" tracks on them, to fool the DVD copying software. I changed from DVD XCopy to DVD Shrink and DVD Decryptor. They work amazingly well. Both files can be found online, and are free. There is also a program called DVD Fab Decryptor. I have heard good things about it, but have never tried it myself.

I posted on this thread back in July.

I now use DVDFab Decrypter Platinum.

I have used just about every backup software available and this new version is amazing.

The new protection software from Sony will not allow some DVD ROM's to even open the DVD when using burning software. Platinum works with the latest anti-copy stuff. Not freeware, but there are ways of getting around everything on the internet.

For that matter, evidently due to the damm copy protection software on the DVD I could not get the movie to even play in 2 of my DVD players, and finally found out that it would play in an old multi region player but thats it.

Yes, see my above post.

Copying Casino Royale is why I switched to DVDFab Decrypter Platinum. The DVD would not even be recognized by my drives. All was good with the Platinum.

Great movie by the way.

I use DVD shrink for the majority of my work. However DVDFab Decrypter (3.0.5.0. Free version) is my second in line for the tougher to backup. I've had one or two that required a combination of other software but that's rare.
