The God Poll

Here is a Poll to dovetail with the current "Is there a God thread".

Perhaps we can keep the contentious debate at the other thread and use this thread to get an idea of the opinions of folks in this forum?

FWIW.

Best,

Kurt

I am convinced that there is no God. However, the force is with us...

I think a fifth option would have been nice. "I have seen no compelling evidence to suggest the existence of a god". I can't prove that one does not exist, but the lack of evidence suggests the probability is low.

I agree Mike, and I should have used your exact words. Poll building is a nuanced task.

The problem is providing a good spread of options without ending up with too many choices!

Kurt

actually , no , that would be a good answer

lack of proof and probability is not really an option in a 'what do you believe' question

that's a chickens answer
it's like saying :
" i don't think so cause it doesn't look like that, but don't want to say no in case he strikes me down with a lightning bolt from the heavens"

in my view there should only be 3 options

yes
yes, but not "a god" , just "something"
no

or if you must have 4
4th option would be "i believe there's a bunch of em" (ancient greek style, hindu, hawaiian ,etc etc)

The question is:

"Which choice most closely matches your feelings on the existence of a god?"

Best,

Kurt

Great idea! This should prove to very interesting if a large number of people vote.

eeh , now you say that
but the original poll was and abstract question
"is there a god" , no more, no less

it's not a feeling, it's a core belief, can't flip flop around it with "maybe" or "depends"

Yes. But, I think this poll will allow us to get a decent grasp on the beliefs, feelings, etc. of those who take it.

In hindsight, there could have been two answers. i.e.:

Do you believe in God(s):

1) Yes;
2) No.

But if you look at the current answers, it's not too hard to deduce the same thing, yes?

Best,

Kurt

Should I kill this thread and have a simple two answer poll as shown above?

trekkor 05-07-2007 03:51 PM

No, leave it the way it is.

Very interesting.

If the traits to believe are in our genes, what will this poll show?

kstar 05-07-2007 03:57 PM

Agreed. At this point we'll let it be.

We can draw our own conclusions.

Best,

Kurt

I think a fifth option would have been nice. "I have seen no compelling evidence to suggest the lack of a god". I can't prove that one does exist, but all the evidence suggests the probability is high.

Creation or random selection?

I'm fairly sure there is a God.
I believe there is some entity greater than us which is not a God.
There is no God.
Your poll options suck. There is no certainty or sureness where a belief is concerned. There is no FACTUAL evidence one way or another. A better poll would read:

I believe in God. My faith allows for no doubts in his/her existence.
I believe there is probably a God.
I believe there is some entity greater than us which is not a God.
I do not believe in the existence of a God.

Then I invite you to wander over to the other thread and enlighten us with your evidence. No one's presented any as of yet. You can be the first!! :)

Uh, yeah, there is. Just not for you.

I agree and I should have made the distinctions you and some others have suggested.

Suckage or not, I think most folks understand the spirit of the poll; basically do you believe in God or not?

I do find the results so far very interesting.

Kurt

And on and on and on:)

The laws of nature are governed by thermodynamics, and fantastic things can happen over long periods of time in the interaction of physics and chemistry. The key is long periods of time--much longer than our life spans. The driving force is energy and entropy.

Obviously we don't know what this show is all about--yet. "Is there a God?" is probably not the right question. I doubt we even know what the right question is. Maybe it's all relative.
