BioDiesel Tax - Be careful!!
Guy got fined $1,000 for producing his own fuel in NC.
This is not right ! http://www.newsobserver.com/news/crime_safety/story/599471.html Bob Teixeira decided it was time to take a stand against U.S. dependence on foreign oil. So last fall the Charlotte musician and guitar instructor spent $1,200 to convert his 1981 diesel Mercedes to run on vegetable oil. He bought soybean oil in 5-gallon jugs at Costco, spending about 30 percent more than diesel would cost. His reward, from a state that heavily promotes alternative fuels: a $1,000 fine last month for not paying motor fuel taxes. He has been told to expect another $1,000 fine from the federal government. To legally use veggie oil, state officials told him, he would have to first post a $2,500 bond. |
Uncle Sam always gets his cut.

I pay road tax on my vegetable oil. I self-assess quarterly at 16.9 cents/liter.
Beats having them decide it's illegal because there's no tax structure in place. FWIW, straight vegetable oil is not biodiesel |
Is this a threat to capitalism and free markets? Is anyone really surprised since the oil companies own our government ?
|
I think being forced to post a $2500 is absurd, but I don't think it's completely innapropriate to charge road tax on biodiesel or vegetable oil. We use the roads like everyone else.
Sure, I'd like to pay no tax at all, but I don't think it's unjust to expect us to pay the same as everyone else. |
Just wait until the local fire department catches wind of it and sends an inspector out to nail him for unpermitted hazardous materials storage. . . This guy's in for a world of hurt.

Some of the setups would send shivers up your spine... people heating half barrels of vegetable oil with propane burners, in their basement. Some states also require a special permit to collect & transport the oil. |
someone creating his own bio diesel is getting hassled while drivers of hybrids are getting perks. maybe i'm missing something:confused:
|
So what will happen if you own a fully electric car or a plug hybrid?
