What is this called?

I know there is a name for these clips but I cannot recall. The image is not perfectly accurate but you should get the idea. It's the top ring shown and they are used to push into the I.D. of a tube and retain assemblies or set spacing. The little prongs bite in and provide a semi-secure location. These are generally steel and pressed in. It's "Wellington rings" or something like that but I cannot remember. Thanks in advance guys.

Ignore the bottom nut and pretend the prongs are closer to straight out. The image is not of what I am looking for but it's close enough to get the idea.

Ninja Star?

Porsche lists it as a "tab washer" in the PET.

these go under the ball joint and lock the castle nut.

The image is only a visual aid, the application I am using it for is not for nut retention. It is more flat with shorter arms and is used to bind inside the I.D. of a tube or circular depression. Think of it as doing the duty of an I.D. circlip without the machined groove. The legs bite into the I.D. providing the secure location.

Makes sense. I'd roam around mcmaster.com for a while.

Found them, thanks guys. "self-locking retaining rings", though I still think they have a proper name as well.

It sounds like you're saying this is on the "inside" of a tube, so I'm not sure if the same term applies, but "ferrule" is a term used for certain types of compression washers.

tinnerman clip?

Nape75'911T 08-22-2007 08:24 AM

Can't answer the question.....

just find it annoying that someone asks a perfectly legit question......and someone who likely needs to get out of the house more often, decides to give the thread 1 star.
Nice.
People never cease to live up to expectations......just keep them low.

Nice.

Who even bothers to look at the "stars" on threads?

I just read the title to determine if I want to open the thread.

Since we all like to be "know-it-alls" the questioning title alone is a certain attention-getter!

;)

I find this most humorous too. Who gives a flying leap about a rating on a thread? If the title doesn't appeal to me, I don't read it, or if it's a slow day, I may read it anyway. If they suddenly removed the ratings feature, I wouldn't even notice.

Mcmaster carr has them and calls them self locking internal retaining rings. Thomson shaft also uses them to retain ball bushings in their pillow blocks. Waldes Truarc makes them also.

Kinky-Cocky Ring for B&D fanatics.

TerryBPP 08-22-2007 10:51 AM

I thought mu ninja star comment would have bumped it up to 3 stars atleast. Thats quality stuff right there.

GO DAWG GO 08-22-2007 11:12 AM

Lendaddy,

Always called them retaining rings. 1 ton rear ends have then retaining the jam nuts for the rear brake drums and bearings. The clip is what we call a clip nut in aerospace. Mc Masters will have the same name. It has a spun welded nut on the inside...
