We started this project on July 3rd. The wife and I did all the demo ourselves. We filled a 20 cubic yard dumpster with all the debris. We had three contractors total. One for the floor, one for the cabinets, and one for the electrical. (rough in electrical only) All the rest was done by the wife and I and a little help from our good friend Stan.

You win the award for loving hubby of 2007. Cindy has been whining for a remodeled kitchen for years. I told her to do it, if that's what she wishes...only one thing. I will head for Reno, or somewhere, the first day a contractor sets foot in our home. She can call me when it's all over.

EVERY kitchen appliance in our home funxtions perfectly. I'm wayyy done with "looky here" crap. Kitchens, cars, guns, it's all the same. Do what works...do what makes you happy. But man, this isn't what would necessarily make me happy. Truth be known? I don't have a clue what that would be...

But I sure as fuc! know, it isn't a kitchen remodel! :rolleyes:

Very nice! (and quick!) I won't even admit how long I've been working on ours :o. The 930's up and running though :D.

The kitchen is the center of the home. The hearth. It is the place around which family life revolves - and in my view it should be perfect.

You have done well, and you will not regret a single cent. Is that a double drawer Fischer Paykel dishwasher I see? If so, well done. Great choice!

And the range/oven is a 36" Wolf or Viking? Whatever, it looks serious.

There are few things that give me greater pleasure than cooking well for good friends. (well OK - there are a few!) A good kitchen is essential for this. You have done exactly the right thing!

Nicely done. As someone that is suffering through a slow remodel of our entire home (done by me), I feel your pain. Sure is nice when you get it done though.

Like I said, do what makes you happy. I want Cindy to be happy as well. If she wants a new kitchen, it's okay by me. I just don't want to be here during all the disruptions and marital friction a remodeling causes. Best for me to be gone when all the chaos begins.

Gorgeous! We did the same thing a couple years ago and are very happy with the results. We added 1200sq ft onto our 1250 sq ft home and added a bathroom, relocated the kitchen, added to the basement and went up 2 stories. We put in oak floors, granite countertops, GE stainless steel appliances, Merillat cabinets, etc... Looks like you did a fantastic job, you should be proud!

You want to talk friction? Try remodeling your house, while living there, with your wife as a helper!:eek:

Preach on brother man! 18 months and counting :rolleyes:. All the structural work is done (main load bearing wall removed). We just need 4 more cabinets, tile, and countertops.

Oh man, I can relate to that. Upside is you learn a lot about each other. How to work with someone who has a different pace, how to work to a plan together, when you're better off walking away and coming back the next day. Nothing like renovations to bring out differences and make you appreciate what you have in common.

BTW, great job on the remodel.

My next-door neighbor was our general contractor, brick mason, rough and finish carpenter, plumber, electrician, and architect. We subbed out the HVAC and granite countertop, but we did the rest. I did the demo and installed the hardwood floors, painted, etc... My wife was a trooper and kept the family sane while the entire house was torn up for 18 months. The project went even better than we expected and we're all still friends and we love the house, especially the new kitchen. Renovating a house, especially while living in it is NOT as easy as shown on TV!

Thanks everyone! For all the work involved it was very rewarding. The wife and I got along great throughout the whole process. Both of us got a little tired of preparing meals out in the garage and doing the dishs in the driveway though.
The dishwasher is a double drawer Fisher Paykel. Fantastic machine! Especially since "I" have been the dishwasher for the last 20 years. ;)
The stove is indeed a 36" DCS gas model. (rickM got that one)
The fridge is a Kitchen Aid.
The granite is called Ubatuba. Its a very dark green. Lots of color up close.
The wall tile is a crackle finish subway tile.
The floors are slate. (very dog friendly) If you scratch them or chip them, just dab a little sealer on it and it disappears. The floors, tile, and counter tops were done by Chris Burke who owns Sunset Tile out of Santa Cruz.
The cabinets were custom made by Santa Cruz Wood Works.
The electrical rough out was done by Red Line Electric from San Jose.
Saturday was the break in day for the stove. The wife went and got a filet mignon roast and served it with a gorganzola cream on top. Fresh asparagas...etc. Yum!

Fischer Paykel.....Excellent stuff!

I have been doing this with my wife for going on 12 years. Every place we have lived has been in some stage of remodel. It's all we know.

What is it like to live in a finished house?

I don't know. We sold the last one as soon as it was finished, and did quite well on it. Now the new one has just as many projects, but more square footage.:(
