My electric drop-in range gave up the ghost. So now the question is: Step up to gas, or simply upgrade to a ceramic cook top?

We've had the ceramic top before. And we like how it provides additional counter space when not in use. And we like how it's easy to keep clean. (Provided you don't scratch it.)

Then again, I'd really like to go gas, but all the gas ranges are priced much higher. And then there's the plumbing equation. (All we have right now is a gas water heater and fireplace.)

Let me add that we're trying to keeop this under $1,200.00.

If the cooktop is not in an island on a slab foundation, the plumbing is easy. I think you could manage a decent gas cooktop in the price range you quote.

For gas to work well the burners need a bit of depth. (for air flow) --just one more consideration.

Dueller is right, too. Gas is low pressure ... easy plumbing.

A quick Lowes search shows 42 stainless models $400 up...although I 'd look in the 700-900 range to get a quality unit. That leaves plenty for plumbing the gas lines.

oooops...I thought you were talking cook top only. You have a drop in range. $1200 can buy a decent model. Check lowes but suprisingly BEST Buy had some great deals . For some reason the freestanding gas ranges are cheaper that drop ins. Don't count out converting over to a freestanding...requires obvious minor mods to counters but not that difficult. Frigidaire makes a neat 30 inch free standing that looks good....friend has one in 36" and it is great for the price.

Me too. I think it was "drop in" that did it.

We just did the same thing in the last 3 weeks. We bought a house with a ceramic range and gas only to the furnace and hot water heater. We bought a new Bosch dual fuel range and had gas run. I would estimate the new run was 50 feet, +/- and the cost was about $350. Great improvement!
