Elevator buttons

how many times have you pressed the "close door" elevator button only to be met with disdain from some internal timer on the switch?

Come to India. When you press Close, the doors actually close, right then, as soon as you press the button. So satisfying, it's hard to describe.

any other worldly quirks you've come across in your travels?

When elevator doors close in some hotels in Canada, they close. Do not attempt to use a body part to keep the door open, it will get crushed.

Shaun, if I were you, I would take cipro after touching the elevator buttons. I was never sicker in my life, than the 6 months I spent in India.

I like in foreign countries when the floor below G are described as -1, -2, -3.

I always smile when people press the close button. They really think it's going to speed things up. Then I laugh when I see the frustration on their face when the late arrival puts his hands in the door to get in.

Slow down you over achievers!

Thanks Red, good advice, but I have my own version of Cipro: fried Chinese hot peppers. mmmmmm

But yes, it's pretty telling sitting on the Dubai tarmac en route to Chennai. Flight attendants walk the aisles spraying copious amounts of disinfectant over the passengers. they tell you not to breathe it in.

Yikes! I'm glad I passed on my optional trips to Chennai and Hyderbad...

I like how escalators in Europe move much faster than those over here. Must be double speed at least.

In Germany, when you press the button at crosswalks, the light immediately changes. Did that once, but did not cross the street, man the bus driver was pissed.

I enjoy watching people here press the crosswalk button endlessly, hoping the light will change faster.

Remember "sniglets"?

Ellacelleration: The mistaken belief that repeatedly pressing the elevator button will make it go faster

mostly am Luis, but I'm in India on business for a few days and in between sleep time zones at the moment. it's 4AM here now, can't sleep. I'm in Chennai, just at the start of monsoon season.

looking forward to coming home, though not before I get my fill of elevator button closure.

I got tripped up by some new elevator system where you punch in the floor you want to go to and then it tells you what elevator get on. I made the mistake of getting on the first elevator that opened and then realized there were no buttons inside .

Monsoon season should be just about over...It starts in the summer.

I just looked it up, you are right. When I was checking weather here before leaving, thought I saw something that said the contrary and it jelled given the rain in the forecast.

True often in public (like gubmint) buildings. Less true in others. You just have to learn the quirks. One place closes the doors now if you press the desired floor (even if the floor is already selected), but no response to the door close button. All in the switches....

I have two doses of Cipro with me anytime I head overseas, compliments of the "sick as a dog" situation I had when last in India. If I never return there I will be a better person!

Shawn, hope you are making a lot of money there....

So here's something new. Chennai is just starting "retreating monsoon" season. The monsoons of the northeast come back here down south. goes on from mid-October through December according to one of my hosts.

I swear, fried Chinese hot peppers are just as effective, and tasty too!

No money to be made here Joe. Value of the dollar is at an all time low, so I'm close to paying U.S. rates for production. Everyone here is scrambling to get European business.

The good news of the weak dollar is the Russians visited us at our buyer's booth the other day and placed a pretty darn big order. We'll be in these department stores this spring starting in Moscow.

Hope your travels are safe.
