http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193180627.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193180713.jpg A couple of friends of mine riding it a few months ago. Its stuck in the back of my garage right now, covered in dust. When I pull it out next time, I'll take a few more detailed shots.
Its a single cylinder, 500 cc motor with a bronze four valve head. It has proportional braking on the front and rears and a manual spark advance (they hadn't invented centrifugal advance yet). Dry sump lubrication and a four speed gear box. It was the last year that a pushrod bike won the Isle of Man. In 1930, Rudge finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the world cup at the Isle. My bike isn't one of the place finishing bikes, but it did finish the race 6th. My Dad bought it in about 1935 from the guy (a Canadian) who raced it in 1930. Is unrestored and that is the original paint and gold leaf trim that you see. It took Best of Show and Best Road Racer last year at the All British Bike Meet in San Jose. I brought it up on a whim, and barely even cleaned the cobwebs off of it. With 20 minutes of putting air in the tires, gas and oil, it will kick right off. It doesn't have a kick starter, you have to roll it and dump the compression release. The only wiring it has is the wire from the magneto to the spark plug. It had a factory guarantee of 100 mph. |
Wow, very cool piece of kit (I think that's an appropriate Brit phrase), and a super bit of history too.
Back in the day when things were simple, but well and often elegantly made. Thanks. |
