Vonage: The New American Devil

Bored as hell in the airport in Dubai, just got an email that we got a message at the office, went to log into Vonage to listen and got this screen:

You need to setup a proxy someplace random that will redirect your requests.

Makes me want to buy a rusty old freighter and set up a pirate broadcast of Al Goldstein's Midnight Blue in some backwater of the UHF spectrum.

I wish you would. Call it a 'cultural exchange.' Probably exactly what is needed.

Let me guess, telephone company owns the internet circuits. It's easier to say a site is evil than say we are a bunch of greedy a**holes who don't want you using Vonage to call your infidel relatives in the US.

My parents use Vonage in France. It has cut our international long distance bills to ZERO.

They're obviously not making enough profit off of oil.

Didn't Google or Yahoo agree to censorship to be allowed into the China market?

Seems to me your demon is not Vonage, but the UAE gubmint. Their country, they can run it how they like.

Good reason never to go back to the UAE. Oh wait, they have lots of money........

Like a router setup routine where everything is blocked except for the known, necessary (read minimal) data/traffic. Until someone complains and a review process takes place the gates stay closed.

They probably don't even know Vonage exists.

Like to see us try that at home?
Frig.

We set this up for my Wife's business 2 years ago, with one phone at her parents house in Mexico. It's been great for all of them. THis past summer, I setup Vonage phones in Romania with Houston phone numbers and left a Wifi VOIP phone with the guys for making calls home at night in the casa. Costs my project $100 per month for both phones. Depending on the carrier, US cell phones run $1.99-$3.49 per minute. A Romanian cell calling the states is about $.99/min. This has saved big bucks.
