WHY????

Tim Hancock 10-28-2007 06:16 AM

I have many old Motocross (Motocross Action), Car (Excellence, Panorama, VW & Porsche), Wooden boat, Aviation (Air Progress, Sport Aviation) and various brochures and catalogs of many different hobbies/intertests. I am a pack rat extreme, my wife wishes I would start tossing some of my treasures, but thus far, I have resisted. At some point, with the internet, I think I will cave in and have a bonfire. I have on many occasion over the years, went back and found valuable info in an old back issue when that particular hobby rises to the top again. It is a sickness I tell you.

You must have too much time.... :D

I throw away mags the same day I get them if they have been read. Just like the daily newspaper.

I guess I have gone the otherway. I have actual acquired back issues of Excellence and Pano when they pop up for free on the local PCA board. I find that they are more relevant to me because they have articles about 944's and not the newest and latest hop ups for Gt3's. I have one shelf about 4 feet long with magazines. I always thing about taking out the individual articles that interest me but then I get thinking that I might one day own that 930 so I better keep the whole magazine.

campbellcj 10-28-2007 09:12 AM

I have gobs of 'em back to the 80's but mostly mid-90's onwards - actually was just thinking about getting rid of them so this is a timely thread. Many years of Pano, Excellence, European Car (and predecessors), Grassroots, and C&D and R&T to a lesser extent. I may keep the Excellence but everything else is gonna go.

pwd72s 10-28-2007 09:46 AM

Not any more...my 39 year collection of PANO, along with other sundry P-car books currently resides in Istanbul. My Excellence back issues were given to Randy Webb.

Now I can begin refilling my shelf space with new interest materials...

Yep - way too many! But I have started to cull them. Just sent all my local Porsche club mags to the club for their archives - going back to issue one in the mid-70s.

Will be doing the same with the 356 club stuff.

Then I'll sort all the old Christo's and sell most along with the old calendars etc.

Plus the 1000s of other mags (all car stuff) going back to the 50s...we have a 7' x 8' set of shelves bulging with them. Off to the swap meets they will go!

[QUOTE=Mothy;3556325]I love the advert's from early National Geographics

- The 1932 Turret Top Chev with an All metal roof, balloon tyres and 4 wheel brakes.
- The Rock of Ages Tombstone Company
- Fork Union Military Academy

I went to Fork Union, great school.
Yes I keep old magazines, but my wife likes to throw them out.
Autoweek, Excellence,

I really love old catalogs.

OK you Excellence guys... who else has the "Porsche Magazine" then "Porsche Magazine soon to be Excellence" and "Excellence - formerly Porsche Magazine" transition? :)

I used to....big deal, right? Now, I ask you...Do uou have a "Palmer original" pool cue, model J, 2nd catalog, your name ebossed on the foil under a clear riing? Or how about Tabbydoll's spoon collection? Remenber a magazine called "Gmund"? Really, it's all about what floats your boat. I know a guy who contributed to PLAYBOY as a catoonist...he has a complete collection, bound as only contributors can get. From issue #1 with Marilyn on the cover to today.

Wanna still brag???

"Things"??? It's all just "stuff"...

Today?????

He's pissed me off on many occasions... I just ignore it. Too many other "good guys" to hang with. You missed a good campout... and I completely understand.

(PS Best to Cindy!!!!!)

pwd72s 10-28-2007 06:38 PM

Eric...too late to ignore it. Car is gone...I'll never have another. But that's okay. A cute 5 year old now rides in the jump seat...as my daughter used to at the same age. It's kind of the passing of a generational torch...and Jeff Smith, nor his "flipper and stripper" buddies will ever see what was once my car...ever again.

Me? Just sitting around, waiting for my arteries to harden... I'm done with P-cars.

Stay tuned..I'll pass on an email I got today.

I've gotten better. Now the only magazines I have a lot of are Excellence, Pano, and VW Porsche (now called European Car) in the attic. I keep my airbrush magazined on a bookshelf in my studio for quick reference.

I really need to throw the cars mags as I really doubt they'll be of any use.

campbellcj 11-04-2007 03:25 PM

I have nearly complete sets of European Car and Panorama from 1996 thru 2006 plus less complete sets from 1992-95. If anybody in the LA/Ventura area feels like picking them up at my place (Agoura Hills CA 91301) FREE, send me a PM or email...

cashflyer 11-05-2007 04:24 AM

I had stacks of Panosport (most unopened), SCCA SportsCar, Grassroots Motorsports, and Hemmings Sports and Exotics that spanned back a couple of years. About a month ago I boxed them all up and sent them to Iraq. Maybe those guys will enjoy reading them, even though they are back issues.

tangerine911S 11-05-2007 07:57 AM

Ive been keeping Excellence, Car and Driver, and Road & Track for prob 7 or 8 years. I like to look back and read about "dated" cars when they were new. Even more fun is looking at my dad's old Car and Driver and Road & Tracks and reading about the classics. You might regret getting rid of them in 30 years or so.
