Mercedes CL550....dear lord...WHY?

I have always been perplexed by the direction Mitsubishi took with their Eclipse model. They seemed to be on to something when it shared a platform with the Dodge(y) Talon.....but then they lost it. Their latest model is FUGLY (and rare....not surprising.)

So traveling I-5 yesterday, I was presented with what, assuredly, must be the latest horrible incarnation of the Eclipse. Looks a bit larger....wretched looking bulbous back end, absurd flared front fenders, odd window line.......wait a minute....as I pass and look at the nose......its a freaking Mercedes!!!!

And a damn expensive one at that. LOL.....and I'm not kidding. I slowed down and took a look. Are you ****** kidding me?!?!?!

$103,000?!?!?!?

Style is a subjective matter, no question, but dear lord. Given the range of cars available for that sort of money......WHY?

Hideous, just hideous.

I honestly don't know. If I had $103k to spend on a car, you can bet it wouldn't be that one.

They make the Eclipse about 5 miles from where I sit--and yes, it is ugly, and bloated, and overweight. The Spyder weighs close to 4,000 lbs!

The previous generation CL was a smooth car. I'm sad to see it is now a caricature of its former self.

I always think of a light-weight, open car when someone says that, like a 550 Porsche or little alfa or fiat

The other day, I was driving a bit faster than a car I didn't recognize in the right lane.

"Toyota must have re-designed the Camry" I thought. Whatever. I don't pay attention to boring cars.

I got a bit closer and noticed the three-pointed star in a circle. I mistook a Mercedes for a Toyota.

That would never have happened ten or twenty years ago. Sad.

Bulbous and blah, just like the new S class it is based on. On the other hand, I do somewhat like the new C class, when equipped with the sport package. The base models are ugly.

Say what you want about BMW and Bangle's styling, but you'll never mistake it for a Camry.

I'd rather drive the Camry than anything with a Bangle-butt.

I think this has more to do with Toyota (and Lexus) mercilessly copying MB for decades. They've been so imitated they don't have anywhere to go.

With the AMG package it looks a lot better.

I disagree. The 7-series isn't much of a looker, but all of the other Bangle designs are quite nice. In a sea of annonymous appliances and retro knock-offs, his designs are modern and interesting. Of course, style is totally subjective.

What I could do without is the modern complexity. I'm yet to read a single positive comment about iDrive, but they continue to complicate it.

The sad part is that they will depreciate so much. I really like the ‘05/’06 C55 AMG, and they are sort of a bargain now (at about 55% of what they listed for), huge power. Warranty is a must on these cars.

I like them, but weren't they about 85K when they first came out? Cars are expensive. I drove my old hack '88 (235K miles) all over the SoCal Santa Monicas yesterday and had as much fun as anyone on the road (I think) including the various F-cars I came across.

The direction that Mitsubishi took the eclipse certainly was mind-boggling. Guys in High School used to talk about the eclipse/talon, and the Turbo AWD model was actually fantasized about.

I guess they replaced it's concept with the Evolution. That being said, do admin and secretaries REALLY like to drive anything good? I mean, SOMEBODY has to be buying these things. That goes for all 'Sporty' cars. 4000lb, 2door coupes with 'sporty' spoilers and whatnot.

As for a $103,000 Mercedes, that's too much money. No WAY that car could make me that happy. How much is a GT3?

The Eclipse now reminds me of the old V6 Camaros. WHY would you buy that? The whole purpose for the existence of a Camaro (and for that matter Mustang) is the V8 monster engine. Without it, why not just buy a Corolla?

Oh wait... the IMAGE...

The Merc above isn't nearly as bad as the current Eclipse and the RX-8 (both of which are horrid!)

Oh man- the RX8? What's wrong with the RX8?

If you are talking styling, then I'd disagree but its all subjective.

But if you are talking about weight/handling, the RX8 is a GREAT track car right out of the box.

If you are referring to the C, they were $60K new. Now you can get one for mid to upper $30's depending on miles. The power is plenty, the only problem is they go through tires like hell, and they aren't cheap either. A set of Pirelli PZero Rosso's for the 18's cost about a grand for a set. 362hp/378fl lb 0-60 4.9 secs - about as fast as a Maserati.

The new C63 is coming out soon (over $60K)- I can't imagine all that power in a small sedan.

no.. the big fish at the top is a CL. The C is the smaller MB. I think for $27K more, you could pick up the CLK 63 Black, now that is "the beast" of them all.

Am I the only one that makes up abbreviations for the various MB classes so I can remember what they are?

SL = Sport Luxury
SLK = Sport Luxury Kompact
S = Sedan
C = Coupe and/or Compact
CL = Coupe Luxury
CLK = Coupe Luxury Kompact
D = Diesel
E = Elderly (describing the drivers )
