Shaun, since you asked here are the ones from that list that I do not practice:

Do not wear a garment that contains a forbidden mixture of fabrics.
19:27 Do not cut off the hair on the sides of your head.
Do not shave off the edges of your beard.

And here are a couple that I struggle with a great deal:

19:17 Do not hate your brother in your heart.
You must love your neighbor as [you love] yourself. I am God.

Now it's your turn.

OK, Mike, then you explain it to me.
Christians believe in the bible and believe the bible is god's word.
In that Bible, God clearly instructs man not to get tattoos.
How could that be any more clear? So this group chose to ignore a direct instruction from God. That's their business.
But claiming that it is OK and the bible doesn't tell them not to get tattoos is a lie.

BTW, the bible also says that all men are sinners, all men will sin, and God knows that and understands and will shower us with his grace even though we are not worthy. He knows we are all a bunch of screw-ups and loves us anyway.

I never, ever said that other people should not get tattos. (God said that.) I said that I will not get one and my children will not get one and I explained why.
I commit sins too, but that doesn't make them OK.

Are you saying that the ones you don't follow are less important to God?

I only follow The Gospels. What else do you need?

99% of the Old Testament, 90% of the New Testament is just story telling, using religion as a form of government. I believe Saul turned Paul is the work of Satan BTW.

I dont see where the bible says anything about tattoos.

I love how religious types confuse interpretation with literal meaning.

Uhhh...I guess it could be more clear if the bible actually instructed man not to get tattoos. Since it doesn't, then it appears that you are simply interpreting what the bible says to suit your own beliefs. Just like all the other folks interpret the bible to suit their particular beliefs. Why are you correct and others wrong?

I voted no, tattoos are so over. I feel bad for all the dudes with tribal bands around their upper arm. Plus my 83 y/o grandmother just got ink, you could hear the tattoo trend jumping the shark while she was in the chair.

I eat cheeseburgers. As often as I can, in fact. God, according to Old Testament scholars, forbids mixing "milk and meat".

I can't believe The Big G really cares whether I have ink. He gave me spots, for Heaven's sake. He cares if I play connect the dots?!

I think literalists take the Bible as the "Word of God", and they're missing the true importance of the Book. It is, to me, an expression of earnest, faithful people attempting to conceive of, explain and relate to God. The words are mens'. How many words did Jesus write in the NT? Are Paul's and/or John's words "God's"? Even if written decades after Jesus' death, in Greek, by people that could not have been present at the time the events occurred?

What about the apocrypha -- several "books" (like the Gospel of Thomas) were widely considered part of the Bible for a long time, until ecumencial or other councils decided that such books really weren't "on point" for the political, social and/or theological message that was convenient. Were they omitting the Word(s) of God? What constitutes our Bible (and who is "our", anyway -- Catholics, Protestants, etc.), especially the New Testament is the result of political decisions by the respective hierarchies of the religion(s), made (in most cases) hundreds and hundreds of years ago.

I can have faith in the message w/o indulging the obvious fiction that God "wrote" the message.

One of my tattoos was inspired by a great book -- How the Irish Saved Civilization, and it is a cross (Celtic, natch) celebrating both the devout Catholic heritage, and the still lively pagan heritage of the Irish. Unlike most of Europe, Catholicism didn't eraditcate the indigenous Irish culture, as much as it was absorbed into it.

But, hey, don't get inked if you don't want to.

What the... Mike you trying to pull our chains right? You seem to be an intelligent guy. I think you're just chain yanking here.

And Yes it does say that, look it up. Leviticus 19:28

There are many laws in the OT. Many are ceremonial laws, if you aren't a Jew then you aren't under ceremonial laws. The NT is clear on this point.

OT Moral law is different.

the passage in the Bible that Sammy references was a directive against the ways of Pagans who, as part of their form of worship, would paint their bodies.

God, it would seem, needs a clear shirts vs. skins concept in deciding who is naughty and who is nice.

But, if you are getting a tattoo as part of worshipping another god, God might take issue with you. Skull with dagger stabbed through the top with snake slithering through the eyes...he'd probably just give you a .

All this Bible bs is making me want to really go out and commit some sins. I need a smoke pretty soon. Will drink a lot and look at pRon tonight too. Maybe I'll even run with scissors and say some bad words.

Jews care about being Kosher, God does not care if you're Kosher. God is looking at your heart.

I went to Brandeis. 4 years in the heart of Jewishness with a lot of hot debate on religion. IM (informed) O, God doesn't care about what you eat or how you eat it. So many of these old laws were about:
1. the Jews being the most civilized in terms of creating a structure of ethics and morals. It was so successful that we use it today.

2. A way of separating themselves from the heathens, and that goes through to today. When you're one of the Chosen People, you want maintain that status, especially when everyone around you is always attacking you.

3. they were the first FDA.

So a lot of these things carry through to today, but a lot don't. So many times in the OT you read how nothing is more pleasing to God than the aroma of a good sacrifice.

Don't see a lot of cloven doves and oxen burning on alters today, do you?

Wow where did that come from? No one here is judging you. Unless you claim to believe, which I don't think you do I don't see where all the hostility comes from.

Yeah, why is that? Jews just decide to give it up?

Religion is an evolutionary institution that reflects the core values and intellectual sophistication of a particular time period.

Sammy, why are you even in this thread? What a downer you are being, bud. People wanna talk about tat's, let them!

"don't tell me how to raise my churrin'!" "God said this, God said that!" "The Lawds gonna come and wipe the earth of these heathens!"
Give it a break.

Go preach somewhere else, like in the "is there a God?" thread.
