You guys have missed 2 of the all-timers. Jimmy Paige may have some of the best guitar solos ever. But for my money it's Eric Clapton. The body of his work is astounding.

rammstein 11-12-2007 09:33 PM

My current favorite Hendrix song is

1983- A Merman Should I turn to be

The Album Verson:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2gTrEvJeq6U&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2gTrEvJeq6U&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

The apartment recording:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/08i012EnqgE&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/08i012EnqgE&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

If someone has a live performance video of this, I will pay you $20 for it.

rammstein 11-12-2007 09:34 PM

I just think Hendrix was a huge tragedy- there was a LOT left in him- his newest material was some of my favorite.

If there's a heaven, and I meet with my old family and old dogs, I want Jimi to be there playing a live show for the reunion.

Shuie 11-13-2007 04:09 AM

What happened to his music after his death is the bigger tragedy. The way the Hendrix estate has whored out every half hearted or off pitch noodling session of Jimi that was ever recorded is unconscionable. Keep in mind that EVERY time Hendrix showed up to jam or just to goof off, noodle, or experiment with an arrangement there was someone there to roll tape. He was that good. It was all recorded and his estate has squeezed every penny out of every recording they've gotten their hands on by marketing them as his completed work.

The catalog of music that Hendrix felt was worthy of release to the public consists only of Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, and Electric Ladyland. Its possible for people that want to discover his music today to go online or to somewhere like Best Buy and buy a dozen different Hendrix CDs and still never get to hear anything that was a finished recording.

If Jimi was part of a band with better vocals I would have been a bigger fan. For me, especially now, to sit & listen to Psychedelic guitar work, is not all that enjoyable. I never did find Jimi's voice good enough to carry a band. I also don't know that I am enough of a guitar purist to rank his music superior to that of a more complete band. Consequently, Jimi's music is not something I would often reach for.

I though Band of Gypsies was pretty good.

Por_sha911 11-13-2007 06:23 PM

Clapton was tight. Satriani, Steve Morse, Al DiMeola are fast. Uncle Jerry could play anything with strings, any style, and with anyone. Pete Townshend was an incredible player and was smashing guitars long before the Punk bands came along. Phil Keaggy is smooth. Joe Walsh is a nut. Stevie Ray, Jimi, Jorma Kaukonen, Leo Kottke, have all made a mark. Who's the best? Depends on what I feel like listening to today.

sammyg2 11-17-2007 08:47 AM

Never a big Jimi fan, Over-rated.

Now take Eric Johnson, there's a guitar player. Recognize the two other guitarists on-stage? (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai). Big names, but Eric over-shadows them.

So true... same with SRV, he had sobered up and was just starting to explore his abilities... he was on his way to doing some amazing things IMHO. Very sad he had to leave. :(

I have heard some Tuck and Patti and that guys always amazes me.

WolfeMacleod 11-17-2007 01:21 PM

Adrian Legg. NO question.

I'm listening to Pandora.com on my computer right now, I have "return to forever" plugged in as the style of music for them to chose from.
They just played Larry Carlton "Point it up"

http://www.Pandora.com/music/song/larry+carlton/point+it+up

That guy can play a guitar!

There are technicians and inovators....Hendrix was both...no other guiatarist that I've heard was both, on the same level as Hendrix. If Hendrix wanted to play it he could. He took the guitar and played it while sitting on the pot for christs sake.

I honestly believe that if he had lived he would have been able to make the guitar speak english...just listen to Machine Gun on the Isle of Wight album..about 4 minutes to 7 minutes in.

Who is the best first baseman ever? Best left hander? Best hitter? Best outfielder?

The answer in all cases is it depends. You can come up with a short list of who can be considered as the greatest ever, but I don't think you can really say one was the best there ever was.

DUK 05-04-2008 04:31 PM

Randy Rhoades

Jim Root from SlipKnoT and Stone Sour...moves pretty good for a big man.

Slipknot's drummer is freakin AMAZING. I mean the main one, not the other 3 guys banging on garbage cans and skulls and stuff! I really like Slipknot.

I wouldn't disagree with you :). On any given night, I've seen plenty (most would be considered "unknown") that could give almost anyone a run for their money...when they're "ON" and everything comes together. Channeling the music (as Keith Richards used to put it).

IROC 05-05-2008 04:59 AM

Buckethead. The guy is an absolute freak, but man can he play some guitar.

Best ever? Nope, that's too hard to answer.

K. Roman 05-05-2008 06:49 AM

Big surprise there.

I'll throw in three that are not necessarily in conflict as they are from slightly differing eras:

Django Reinhardt
Wes Montgomery
Stanley Jordan

Of course it seems most of you are thinking ROCK guitarists, so none of these three would qualify in that category. Well, maybe Jordan would in a round about way.

Rick Lee 05-05-2008 08:30 AM

I am really getting down on Jimmy Page. The more I hear of his live playing, the less I like him. Ok, the BBC Sessions were excellent and I've seen some good snippets here and there. But overall the guy is still just a sloppy live player, which makes me wonder how much magic they needed in the studio to make things sound polished. I mean, when you play a solo like the one on Heartbreaker and leave it on the album, despite being able to redo or polish is as much as you want, you gotta wonder what he's thinking.

rouxroux 05-05-2008 09:49 AM

Django Reinhardt
Joe Pass
Chet Atkins
Danny Gatton
Frank Zappa

and one still living: Steve Morse

deathpunk dan 05-05-2008 10:07 AM

I think page is awesome because of his sloppiness, not in spite of it. It's rock and roll, not brain surgery.

rock and roll is not high art.
Why do so many forget that?

nostatic 05-05-2008 10:09 AM

Page was a brilliant arranger and writer. But like Rick, I always found his lead work sloppy. He could write and crank out a riff though...between him and Richards you have most modern rock guitar covered.

Django always makes me smile. But Joe Pass left me slack jawed unlike anyone else.

I couldn't disagree more. Playing sloppily is not only insulting and disrespectful of one's paying audience, it also show laziness and lack of technical prowess. Lots of rock players are every bit as talented as sculptors, painters or stage actors. They practice hours on end for many years to expand their ability, songwriting and style. If you love Page because he's sloppy, you must hate players like Eric Johnson.

Rick Lee 05-05-2008 10:17 AM

I should stress that I know Page CAN play and HAS played well live and that makes it all the more frustrating. I know he CAN do it. He just doesn't do it often. Seeing someone who's always sloopy is one thing. But when you know they can play better and then you see them sort of blowing off their work, I find that lame.

FWIW, I saw Rush in Albuquerque last Tues. Neil Peart was having a bad night. He just wasn't in his groove. But the 49 or so other times I've seen him play almost flawlessly made me kind of not hold Tuesday's show against him.

No you aren't. Not even close - I am so eff off. :D

If we can't come to consensus on my greatness I would submit Mike McCready from Pearl Jam as a pretty good player.

Page and that guy from AC/DC play sloppy like that.

My brother, who y'all have never heard of, but can flat freakin' play, always cracks me up when he does immitations. He will play like Jimmie Page or the AC/DC guy(Angus Young maybe?) sloppy, or do Eddie van Halen with the finger hammer thing(Bro can lay down an amazing version of "Eruption", or do Chet Atkins or SRV.

He always tells me the Jazz guys are the most impressive, because they can play ANYTHING, not all the Rock or R&B guys can do that.

Some of those country guys can really play, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Vince Gill to name a few. I don't think there is an individual "The Guy" for any musical instrument though.
