Slipknot's drummer is freakin AMAZING. I mean the main one, not the other 3 guys banging on garbage cans and skulls and stuff! I really like Slipknot.

I wouldn't disagree with you . On any given night, I've seen plenty (most would be considered "unknown") that could give almost anyone a run for their money...when they're "ON" and everything comes together. Channeling the music (as Keith Richards used to put it).

Buckethead. The guy is an absolute freak, but man can he play some guitar.

Best ever? Nope, that's too hard to answer.

Big surprise there.

Consequently, Jimi's music is not something I would often reach for.

I'll throw in three that are not necessarily in conflict as they are from slightly differing eras:

Django Reinhardt
Wes Montgomery
Stanley Jordan

Of course it seems most of you are thinking ROCK guitarists, so none of these three would qualify in that category. Well, maybe Jordan would in a round about way.

I am really getting down on Jimmy Page. The more I hear of his live playing, the less I like him. Ok, the BBC Sessions were excellent and I've seen some good snippets here and there. But overall the guy is still just a sloppy live player, which makes me wonder how much magic they needed in the studio to make things sound polished. I mean, when you play a solo like the one on Heartbreaker and leave it on the album, despite being able to redo or polish is as much as you want, you gotta wonder what he's thinking.

I think page is awesome because of his sloppiness, not in spite of it. It's rock and roll, not brain surgery.

rock and roll is not high art.
Why do so many forget that?

Page was a brilliant arranger and writer. But like Rick, I always found his lead work sloppy. He could write and crank out a riff though...between him and Richards you have most modern rock guitar covered.

Django always makes me smile. But Joe Pass left me slack jawed unlike anyone else.

I couldn't disagree more. Playing sloppily is not only insulting and disrespectful of one's paying audience, it also show laziness and lack of technical prowess. Lots of rock players are every bit as talented as sculptors, painters or stage actors. They practice hours on end for many years to expand their ability, songwriting and style. If you love Page because he's sloppy, you must hate players like Eric Johnson.

I should stress that I know Page CAN play and HAS played well live and that makes it all the more frustrating. I know he CAN do it. He just doesn't do it often. Seeing someone who's always sloopy is one thing. But when you know they can play better and then you see them sort of blowing off their work, I find that lame.

FWIW, I saw Rush in Albuquerque last Tues. Neil Peart was having a bad night. He just wasn't in his groove. But the 49 or so other times I've seen him play almost flawlessly made me kind of not hold Tuesday's show against him.

No you aren't. Not even close - I am so eff off.

If we can't come to consensus on my greatness I would submit Mike McCready from Pearl Jam as a pretty good player.

Page and that guy from AC/DC play sloppy like that.

My brother, who y'all have never heard of, but can flat freakin' play, always cracks me up when he does immitations. He will play like Jimmie Page or the AC/DC guy(Angus Young maybe?) sloppy, or do Eddie van Halen with the finger hammer thing(Bro can lay down an amazing version of "Eruption", or do Chet Atkins or SRV.

He always tells me the Jazz guys are the most impressive, because they can play ANYTHING, not all the Rock or R&B guys can do that.

Some of those country guys can really play, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Vince Gill to name a few. I don't think there is an individual "The Guy" for any musical instrument though.
