He can pretty much play any instrument he picks up, it is sort of freaky.
I have friends cousin that is like that... most people don't realize there is a lot more to being a great musician that just playing... you have to give up your privacy and a lot of your free time AND put take a lot of BS from the industry... some VERY talented people just can't/won't put up with it.

imho seeing TE should be a "bucket list" event for anyone who even remotely loves guitar playing, or even music in general. I've seen a lot of great players over the years (both known and unknown) and I don't think I've ever seen such a combination of chops and sheer joy on stage.

Agreed on all points and he has to be one of the happiest performers (of any type) - he was obviously having a ball.

Tom Scholz

I have much respect for Tom. He has a BS and MS from MIT in mechanical engineering, built his own studio (not purchased the gear and put it together, built his own board and much equipment), and recorded the greater part of the first Boston album solo in his basement.

Yes May did, it's the Red thing you see him play 90% of the time.

Sholtz is as much an engineer as he is a musician.

Sometimes more of one than the other depending on his state of mind.

I heard somewhere that Brian May has a PhD in Astrophysics... He interrupted his education for his career with Queen, and completed his Doctorate after Freddy Mercurys death

BRIAN MAY BIOGRAPHY

Found it:

Quote:
I 2007, after a 30-year break pursuing his musical career, Brian returned to Imperial College, London, to sign up to complete his Doctoral Thesis in Astrophysics, and after one year, successfully submitted the new version of his thesis on Interplanetary Dust. Although already the proud holder of Honorary Degrees from the Universities of Hertfordshire, Exeter and John Moore’s, Liverpool, Brian in 2007 finally achieved the award of a full PhD degree and DIC - Diploma of Imperial College. Brian subsequently accepted a post of Visiting Researcher at Imperial College and will be continuing his work in Astronomy.

My new favorite is Joe Bonamassa. Check out the DVD of his "Live at the Royal Albert Hall"!
He's unbelievable!

FYI:

Starz and/or Encore (cable TV) is playing a pretty cool guitar documentary this month called "It might get loud" with Jack White, The Edge, and Jimmy Page. Worth checking out/Tivo-ing.

Deserving of consideration ...

It is widely quoted that Eric Clapton is on record as stating that Albert Lee is, in his opinion, "the greatest guitarist in the world." Emmylou Harris has stated that Lee is "a brilliant guitar player. His sound is unmistakable—often emulated, never equaled. When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth, I'll be able to say (with pride if that's allowed) that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee."

Albert Lee deserves, at minimum, to be mentioned in the same breath with all the others here and puts most of them on the trailer in my opinion.

There's just sumthin about a pencil-neck pasty faced brit trying to be a redneck that seems weird.
