Okay, drunk drivers should be arrested and the distracted drivers are nearly as bad. But I've got my own ideas on how to solve our driving crisis.

First, everyone who uses parking lights instead of headlights should lose their license. Second, everyone who doesn't use turn signals should lose their license.

Now, would this get all the bad drivers off the road? Certainly not since just because a person doesn't use parking lights instead of headlights or does use turn signals is not the sure sign of a good driver.

But it would remove a whole bunch of the jerk drivers since seldom do we ever see a jerk driver who does properly use turn signals!

Wow, that's funny because I see a lot of white looking drunk drivers in my area...makes me want to throw them into my trunk and drop them off in Europe!

I have been hit by a drunk driver and have no tolerance, get them off the road no matter what it takes. I have called the cops couple times on erratic drivers.

Cell phone users that can't control their cars should be cited and fined. Europe was no tolerance for it either, funny they also have the best booze. No problem with drinking just don't get behind the wheel.

Yeah, I spent some time in Budapest and you sure do not want to drink and drive there. One of my retired cohorts got in an accident after drinking and it turned into a real horror story for him.

I have called to report clearly impaired drivers and there was no response at all. Gave them the tag number and everything, but they told me an officer has to witness it. So if they get where they are going, they are in the clear.

I don't bother any more

I saw a lady yesterday reading a book, she gave me a nasty look when I honked and yelled at her. Few days ago a woman on her phone almost hit me several times. I stopped short at a signal in front of her and went back to tell her about it. She was furious when I pointed out that she was at least as impaired as a drunk and she needed to hang up and drive before she killed someone, or someone killed her and ruined their lives

Would you also take away the license of those drivers who stomp on the gas pedal and block you out the minute they see you signal to merge in front of them?

If beating people was legal, it would be a much better world. Bullies do it already anyways, so it would open the field for the rest of us.

California finally is getting it correct!

New and renewal driver's licenses must sign an agreement, automatic manslaughter or murder 2 if you kill someone while driving drink!

I find this hard to believe. It won't prevent one drunk driver death and I'm sure it would lose a court challenge. How can someone plead guilty to a crime by signing their name before a crime has been committed and indeed before there has been anything approaching intent?

I've called the police about drunk drivers before. First time was in the late 70s, when I was an assistant Manager at 'the arches'.
It was a late Thursday afternoon, when the drive-through speaker erupted with profanity. Checked with the d-t staff who reported this guy just started cursing. I dashed out the back door to the car and advise the guys if they don't watch their language they won't be served. Three guys with a half-empty flat of beer in the car with them.
Back inside I called the local RCMP detachment and got the NCOIC, he asked if we could hold them there for three minutes. Drive-through orders started coming real slow for a bit, until I saw the police car enter the lot. As the guys were getting their munchies, the sargeant rapped on their passenger window and directed them to "Park it over there." All three got a ride and the car was towed.

When I was growing up on a tricky intersection, 12 miles from the nearest town, I got an early education regarding the results of impaired driving. Almost all of the cars my Dad pulled out of the ditches (or our barnyard) were people who didn't realize their driving skills weren't what they thought they were after several drinks. A couple, for whom the police and a wrecker were called to get the bodies out of the river, never got to sleep it off in our spare room.

I just don't have a lot of tolerance for it.

Wish someone called on this guy!

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,319165,00.html

TOLEDO, Ohio — Five members of a Maryland family were killed late Sunday when a pickup truck driven by an alleged drunk driver slammed into their minivan, MyFOXToledo.com reports.

Bethany Griffin, 36, and her daughters — Jordan Griffin, 10, Haley Burkman, 10, Lacie Burkman, 7, and Vadi Griffin, 6 months — were killed when the pickup hit their vehicle on Interstate-280, just north of downtown Toledo.

The family's father, Danny Griffin, and two other children survived, the station reports.

Michael Gagnon, 24, of Adrian, Mich., was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-280 when his black Ford F350 collided with the Griffins' white Chevy Astro minivan, MyFOXToledo.com reports.

"It was among the worst I've seen," Assistant Fire Chief Luis Santiago said of the crash scene. Bits of gift wrap and toys were strewn about the highway, suggesting the minivan was carrying members of a family heading home from visiting relatives for the holidays, he added.

While I might be inclined to do so if I encounter an obvious drunk, why is Caltrans et al. stopping here? Why not turn in drivers applying makeup, or distracted by cell phones? Or why not just turn in bad drivers? Or what about drivers whose gas mileage is too low? What about SUV's whose bumpers are too high?

Since when is it the government's job to turn us all in to snitches and squealers ? And does it stop with driving? Don't we have public agencies whose jobs it is to police these things? Reminds me of the stories I used to hear about communist countries - all citizens living in fear of being snitched on - even when they had done nothing wrong. I don't think that this is where we want to go...
Great point! This is the influence of MADD. I had a conversation on the radio once & told her that if her organization was the Mothers against bad drivers or the Mothers against dangerous drivers, she would have some integrity. The truth is, they dont give a DAMM how incompitent or dangerous you are, as long as ya ain't drinkin that akyhawl. I told her to come out of the closet & make her point. I also challenged her to drive some cones in a parking lot (supervised), with her sober & me at the legal limit, & if she didn't win, she should stop annoying people.

She declined.

Correct? This is yet another example of a law they pass that will never stand up to the slightest legal challenge. You can't plead guilty to something before you do it. All you have to do is refuse the test and give up your license for a year or two, whatever it is, if you happen to kill someone driving drunk.

If this were about public safety, I'd be more supportive. It's NOT. The huge local increase in DUI arrests in the past five years has become an economic windfall for local government and it has failed to reduce the alcohol related accident rate at all. So... despite the fact that statistics show DUI checkpoints to be completely inneffective, they will stay with us because they are a fabulous tool for generating income. Never mind that the U.S. Constitution/Bill of Rights does not allow them.

The other night I drove from Walnut Creek to Oakland, CA and passed 4 signs encouraging motorists to call 911 to report drunk drivers. Brilliant. The 911 telephone lines are already backed up. Good luck when you need 911 because your child stopped breathing. The operators will be busy managing the 911 profit center. Do you honestly think the new push to use 911 operators to report bad driving won't impact emergency medical response time?

i lanesplit on my motorcycle, and i can see into most cars.

i routinely see idiot cel behavior, eating, smacking kids, sex, sex involving only one person, reading, etc. my favorite was a guy on the 405 during the monday morning commute. he was hunkered down in the seat, steering with his knees. and lighting a bong with his hands.

as much as i hate the idea of ratting other motorists out to our worthless local cops, sometimes it's justified.
