Race in American Politics.

The cruel lash of slavery has so scared the psyche of African Americans that the mere whisper of race breaks open the wounds. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves allowing them to be men under the law. However he could not give them social equality even if he had wanted to. It was too much a leap of faith for white America to accept African Americans as equal when so short a time ago they had been considered to be mere property on par with the family dog. Now 150 years has passed and Barack Obama has arrived on the scene, an African American running for the highest public office in the land. Barack Obama asks to be considered for President based upon his merits, his ideas, his intellect and his good sense as a man and not upon the colour of his skin. White America has given him the nod of affirmation with his victory in Iowa. However there are those in America who would throw the colour of his skin in face to break open those wounds for their own narrow political gain.

What experience did JFK have, Truman have, FDR have, TR have..Abe Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington have.

You didn't challenge anything let alone my "assumptions" You mistake my recitation of history for an indictment of yourself. U included yourself in that group of cynical political and economic manipulators that would use race as a straw man.

I too don't care much for Obama's views which has nothing to do with his race. Let him stand or fall on the merits of his ideas and not muddy the waters by degenerating into the free for all of making the colour of his skin the issue.

Otherwise the cynical just might just conclude that this race for "change" is just the same old politics of yore.

Sorry guys, but what clinton said was close to factual, as MLK did bring ER to the attention of the country, and it did take a Presidential signature to make it the law of the land, but they leave out that the dems were against it, and it was the Republican minority leader who made it happen, and the dems still have a former Klansman in office. Fact is, the dems have done nothing to help minorities, they have kept them down and dependent

I think people of mixed race are free to describe themselves in whatever way they like. Tiger Woods refuses to identify himself as a "black man" out of respect for his Asian mother. I could be wrong, but I believe Obama describes himself as black. Matters not one bit to me.

If I do not have the opportunity to vote for Ron Paul, I'll likely vote for Obama as he is the only other candidate that is likely to withdraw from Iraq in a timely fashion.
