Steely Dan DVD recommendation
As the title says.
Have any favorites? Thanks. |
|
Aja.

I've only got one on DVD (along with almost all their CDs), but my choice would be "Two Against Nature" from a couple of years ago. It contains many of their old classics and is EXTREMELY well done imo. My only beef...after one listen through (with the talking, etc. mixed between tracks), I wish it had a "audio only" program that would skip the interview portions so you could just let the music play. Still highly recommended...

Thanks guys. I just ordered Aja and will order Two after the newness wears off.

One of their greatest hits albums, The Definitive Collection, would be great as well.

The Aja dvd (I'm assuming it is the same as the earlier "Classic Albums" release) is a fascinating look behind the scenes of the production of the album. You get to hear rejected solos from Peg, Michael McDonald's backing vocals on Peg isolated (amazing), hear comments from the studio musicians who played on the tracks, and get insight into what Becker and Fagan do and try to accomplish.

That's the review I just read...sounds like a winner to me!

However if you are looking for a Steely Dan performance DVD (like a concert) this may not be your cup of tea. IIRC they do more talking than playing music. |
Ya know they're not swingers!

Scottmandue (or others), Any concert DVDs you can suggest? |
The Two Against Nature dvd is them playing live in a small venue in New York City before the full '00 tour. It is interspersed with interviews and whatnot. Great mix and good songs. I wish there was something from '03, '06 and '07 with Carlock on drums though.
|
Those two are the only DVD offerings right?
|
only ones i know of
|
Saw them this year. Gosh they had, as you would expect, a good band.

The very first "Rock" song I can remember hearing was Do it Again. I was a youngster then. Their music is absolutely timeless. Still get the same spark out of their music today as I did when I first heard it. Except for Realin in the Years, somehow I got kind of burned out on that song. Probably time to revisit it I guess. |
I saw them play in the field house at Central Michigan University in 1971 (I think), just after the first album came out. It was the best live performance I've ever seen.
Saw them again in the late 80's - good, but..... not as good as the original version. As you might guess, I like their early music best. To me most of their stuff after Aja is a little too overwrought. ymmv. |
Gaucho is a great album!
