Five young men killed in 2008 BMW M5 on private airstrip

Private airstrip (where John Travolta lives) in Ocala, FL
2008 BMW M5
5 young men
1 act of stupidity

Video of scene:
http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid294382118?bctid=1392485027

Police say the guys were apparently racing the BMW, but don't know if another car was involved. Skid marks at the end of the runway indicate the driver attempted to stop, but was going too fast. The car sailed over 200 feet before hitting a tree, ripping in half, and catching fire. Authorities say the engine was actually torn from the car in the crash. Three of the passengers were ejected, two were trapped in what was left of the car. All were dead.

You mean the 707?

The runway is 7550 feet in length.

Too bad the idiot driver killed his friends.

Cheers

The runway is NE of the town of Ocala. About an hour north of Tampa. You can find it on Google Earth. It was originally built by the guy that invented the Nautilus workout equipment.

Id almost bet they were trying to achieve the cars stated top speed of 200mph. I could say how stupid but at that age I could easily see myself doing the same thing. I guess the main blame here should be on whomever father they probably conned the car from.

I've flown over that place.

What did they do? You have a 7500 foot stretch of pavement, you can easily do 170 mph on that if your car has 500 horsepower. How did he wind up in the trees?

And what did John Travolta have to do with it? If I lived there, you can bet that MY 928 would have seen a lot more high-throttle time than it has seen.

-Why do you think that some people live at "Fly-In" communities in Florida? Hello? No speed limits?

This one goes back to the 1980's...

This is insanity. Never mind the fact he has a airliner in his front yard but this things easily costing him close to $500,000 a year just in regular running cost. Im sure one of those Rolls Royce engines is at least $200,000 per overhaul. Heck every time he fills it up with aviation fuel its $45,000 all 15,000 gallons lol.

200 ft in the air. Thats got to be some kind of record! With everything else thats going on this planet, why does 5 wealthy kids crashing a $100k car on an airstrip even make the headlines.

Stupid hurts.

(Where does it state the model of the BMW? All the articles I've read locally just say "2008 BMW"...)
