I remember many years ago there were two 4 masted schooners derelict along the coast of Maine at Wiscasset. I suppose they are long gone by now.

Ha... no, about 3 feet at the deck. a bit more down at the hull.

High seas? That's why you reef some of the sails. No problem.

RE. schooners. These boats sat very low in the water also.. especially when loaded with 100 tons of grain or wood. They in general were not very tender at all. BTW. most of them only sailed downwind also., In fact they needed huge amounts of ballast in the hold,.. usually just rock, ( in the absence of cargo...) the ballast was dumped in the harbors prior to loading. in fact here in philadelphia and the delaware river, these huge piles of ballast on the sea/river floor form the best places to fish nowadays.. ...many of us have "rockpile coordinates" in our gps .

Note there are no yards (the cross poles on the masts ) such as are seen on the vessels in the enlargement.

Is this one a 4 masted schooner? It is going to be scrapped soon.

That vessel is ship rigged on all four masts. The yards affixed crossways to the masts are used to support the square sails. Ship rigged vessels used the trade winds and, as mentioned above, could only sail down wind or cross the wind. (Although that statement erroneously used the term schooner). Schooners were rigged fore and aft on at least two masts (like a modern sloop) the fore and aft rig did allow the vessel to sail "into the wind" to a degree,
The schooner rig could be set and trimmed from the deck, allowing for a smaller crew. Square rig requires crew members to climb into the rigging to set or furl sails. Some of the larger sails could weigh a ton.
