As seen off Huntington Beach this morning. Heading south of the pier to get a good parking spot for the air show this weekend.

Two 69 mustangs. I thought all 69 mustangs had four headlights, but the Shelby is a late 68 build sold as a 69 with only two headlights. I guess it’s the Shelby difference.

They competed at le Mans in 1969. The Ford won, the 917 DNFd. But it was close until the 917 went out.

917 at 69 Le Mans was just it's 3rd entry in any real competition, they weren't fully ready yet. But it lead for most of the race till they dropped out with issues.

The performance was there for Le Mans, handling was not yet fully developed, reliability not yet either.
The GT40's were instantly obsolete so were the Ferrari's of those days., only reason the GT40's still won is that reliability issues on the 917's.
Ford gave up trying for Le Mans after 1969 , they had their issues with the MkIV, ran it in Canam but it just didn't work anymore, it wasn't competitive.

The 917's performance at Le Mans prompted Enzo to sell half his stock to Fiat just to build 25 512's in response..

The 917 really was a game changer on all levels.

THanks Van.. great synopsis. Its really hard to believe that the 8 banger NA Ford could keep up at any time with the 12 cylinder monster that was the 917, putting out potentially close to 1100 hp. maybe it was an earlier version of the 917. Yeah its amazing that the GT40s were into senescence so early, even in canam. But the aero took off very quickly in canam, which the GTs lacked big time.

Geneman the 1100 hp you cited was for the much later CanAm series. The Lemans cars were naturally aspirated.

Best

68 GT40 had something like 425 hp 4.9 liter Carbs
earlier gt40 with 7 liter made more power, not quite clear to me why it dropped displacement and power

69 917 came out with 4.5 Liter delivered 520 hp
the 4.9 did 600
5.0 630 hp

And with Bosch multipoint injection , i'm sure throttle response was better as well

No problem, glad I could help. I took screenshots of each pic, edited them by rotating and cropping and then re-posted them. Easy peasy with my phone. No worries!!!
