And they did it for no good reason, IMO.
Really... of what value is that crash data?
What are the odds of a Malibu hitting a 59 Bel Air in real life?

I guess you guys missed the PR aspect of this. People still think the cars of "the good ol' days" are safer since they're so much bigger and heavier. Chevy decided to prove that they ARE doing something right. Impala was pristine, no rust, and is of similar size and weight to the Malibu. The difference 50 years is DRAMATIC. I don't think anyone can now say that the impala is safer than a modern car.

Actually this has been much discussed.

a) the video, while authentic, might just depict the best possible crash in terms of the modern car
b) Wanna bet which one would hold up better in a side impact (which is probably more likely)
c) you can see some rust blow out of the chassis if you look hard at the video

Impressive nonetheless.

a) yep, I'm sure that's part of it, no point in make a 20K investment in the car alone if you're not going to make the most of it.
b) I'd bet on the new car without thinking twice. Force Analysis has come a LONG way in 50 years.
c) yep, looks like it, and it doesn't surprise me, any car 50 years old is going to have SOME, even if it's buried in the rockers, or frame rails.

I've seen this chatted about elsewhere and some have questioned whether there was an engine in the Bel Air. Also, there was some discussion of it having been a rust-bucket that was gussied up for the experiment, with the quantity of what appears to be rust dust upon impact that spews forth from the car. There's a video of it on youtube.

so that proves that old cars do infact have a "crumple zone" and i bet the driver experienced less g-force. No big loss it was a 4 door. As long as it doesnt increase my classic cars insurance premiums. One thing i notice when driving a newr car is that you cant hear sh#t going on outside. Theyre so sound proofed nowadays. Thats gotta contribute to alot of crashes no doubt
