I could be very wrong as well. At any rate, memories of an encounter with Sterling Moss, who won the 1955 Mille Miglia in the 300 SLR roadster, are flooding into my mind and I'm composing them in a response to be forthcoming.

Judging by the number of tags on the plate, I'd say it's real, but, you could be right.
Replica. A rather poor one at that. What's with the GM taillights?

BTW, CA plates in the 50's were yellow with black lettering. the black plates didnt start until the early 6o's

Those taillights look wrong. The look too fat, too high and if I am not mistaken, when this was made, they had yellow directionals only. Also, the logo looks too small and what is that extra circle around it? Also, I don't think I have ever seen one with front bumpers.

While this car is beautiful that I would love to have, I very highly doubt this is genuine.

I'm aware that Calif plates were yellow/black. I believe they sent new plates out to all cars registered when they changed to black/yellow, but I could be mistaken.
The extra circle is the outline of the gas filler lid.
He was old enough to have been the original owner.
I think this is a roadster that was customized to look like an SLR, it isn't an original.

Dude, it's a kit car. BTW, the SLR had the exhaust coming out of the side vents.

Here's what a real interior looks like.

Funny, I was just thinking, I don't recall ever seeing one in any color but silver. So, I did a little more research. Apparently only 9 of these were made and 1 was destroyed. I highly doubt someone would have one of the last remaining 8 that is worth several millions dollars and take it to the grocery store. Also, that windshield doesn't look right.

I could be wrong, but those side windows look like ones off an MGB.

Nope. wheelbase is far too short.

I think the dash they are trying to emulate in this model was the earlier model 300sl dash that looks almost exactly like my 190sl dash. So, I know it well.

I am now 100% positive that the guy was yanking your chain. The rearview mirror has always been on the dash, not the top of the window frame, and chrome not colored. The door handles both inside and out are wrong. Plus, the 300 NEVER had vent windows. Still a beautiful car, but not even close to original, or a 300sl or a 190sl that was converted.

Sort of related, here is the production of the 300SL.
