US Army Embarks on the Testing of a Hybrid Ultra Light Vehicle (ULV) | Defense Update:

Powertrain – With two electric motors (front and rear) the ULV’s hybrid powertrain improves both mobility and survivability. By eliminating the need for a driveshaft, the underbody can be designed to perform well in a blast event. And either of the electric motors can power the vehicle, providing redundancy. A lightweight diesel engine powers the electric motors and also enables:

• Immediate launch
• Stealth drive
• Silent watch
• Exportable power generation
• High torque at low/near zero speeds
• Improved fuel economy

In a coast-down test, the test truck is run at a predetermined speed, usually 65 mph, and on a straight, flat section of track, the truck is placed in neutral and allowed to coast down to some predetermined speed. Measurements are taken to determine the relative impact of rolling resistance and mechanical drag (usually constant) and aerodynamic drag (variable with speed). The test requires 20-30 runs and each is measured, compared and averaged along a curve.
