It depends on the tie.

The only other time I wore it after that was years ago to a funeral - probably a faux pas. I might have enjoyed the cruise if she had gone too. She was long gone when I got back,..... but I still have Jerry's tie,... I think .

I just learned my pop taught be a Four in Hand so that's what I've used all these years. Looks like I need to practice a little. You know, for the twice a year I need to wear one.

For xmas one year my staunch conservative bro/sis in-laws gave me a 'real" gift and a "gag" gift.
A "Power Tie" and a pair of gold lamay Mango (SNL skit) shorts. I'm a bit twisted so needless to say our ideas of "real" and "gag' gifts are polar opposites. Still wear those shorts from time to time.

I tie a four-n-hand - provides a nice triangle and a serious power dimple if you pull it right.

Amen to the four-in-hand.
I was a full windsor type until I realized how absurd the thicker "nicer" ties looked with that knot. I'm not diddy. I'm an engineer. I work for the gubmunt. I'll splurge for a good jacket or suit but there are limits. Although, the full windsor is OK for all those old and thin Lands End ties from grad school. More importantly, consider your face/head shape and collar style when picking a knot. The interweb or the woman that puts up with you can provide help for this. mike in los alamos

There's this other knot that's as symmetric as the full Windsor, but is only half Windsor size. Starts with the tie inside out....

Definitely full-windsor. Full-windsor is well-balanced, picture perfect, and you get that perfect-dimple in the middle. Disclaimer......only with silk ties. I would agree with Steve: heavier material and full-windsor would become a fat-goiter around your neck. |

Choice of knot depends on the collar of the shirt, the style and build of the tie and the suit you are wearing.

ding, ding you are correct sir I don't really see much difference between the full windsor and 4 in hand knots myself, half windsor looks half assed. I wear a tie every day because people seem to expect it, goes with the white coat

I like the full Windsor for symmetry and the nice dimple unless the tie is too short (pretty common since I'm tall) or really thick. If I do a full Windsor on some ties it ends up short and I look like a Manager at Arby's.
At work I wear a zipper tie for safety in case some crazy passenger or piece of equipment tries to yank on my tie, the zipper will break before my neck.
