That is pretty cool, although I'd have found a nicer way to style the hood. . . um. . . "scoop". . . thingy. Right now it just looks like a coffee can up there. Or maybe the exhaust stack from a diesel generator. Or a chimney. Or maybe a grain silo. Or a missile launch tube. Actually that last one WOULD be cool. Should paint it black with some faux rivets and a big # on the side of it.

That's just a simple turbocharger "jet". Easily made but very limited on thrust. Lots of neato stuff you can do with 'em though. Check this:
Jet powered barstool: http://www.turbinegroup.com/page2.html Jet powered beer cooler: http://www.asciimation.co.nz/beer/ Jet powered go-kart (well, you already found one): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar4dtYBlZ8s Jet powered bicycle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar4dtYBlZ8s Possibly the coolest one - jet powered skydiver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fLOgMQon7c&feature=related

I'm a little confused - if the exhaust comes out the big pipe in the top, how does it go? Is there a driveshaft out the back end or something?

A turboprop aircraft uses a gas turbine. It sounds like a jet but it has a propeller driven via a gearbox off the turbine shaft. The engine in that 928 would be driving through a reduction gearbox then most likely on to the automatic transmission. What I don't knowis how you would control speed of the car. I wouldn't have thought that you throttle back the engine so I imagine that the gas turbine runs at a constant speed and there is some way to control how much 'drive' you put out into the transmission?

I'd think it'd be way easier/safer with a manual transmission. Dunno how you go about integrating that with a fully automatic transmission unless a panic stop is done by throwing the throttle to idle and applying the brake (just like any other automatic car). Assumption is that the "idle" setting on the turbine reduces output shaft torque to the point that the clutches on the automatic transmission know what's going on and de-couple the engine from the rear wheels. Pretty big assumption.

Chrysler shaft turbine powered car from the 1960s:
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/turbine.html As for the 928, no more water pump/timing belt changes! I bet a surplus shaft turbine might be cheaper than a rebuilt 928 engine!

This is about the most work I've seen somebody do to get out of timing belt changes!

Jay Leno's jet powered motorcycle it just exits by his leg.
Uses a turbine engine from a helicopter. Has no idea how fast it will go. |
