Sports Car Market magazine; damn fine periodical!
Finally decided i'm getting a sub to this rag. Absolutely the best thing this side of Excellence and the few UK 911 mags.
Too much fun playing "what would i buy with $xxxxk" reading through it.

I subscribed to it several years ago, I liked it much better then. It seems to have gotten away from the "enthusiast" reader base and more toward the uber wealthy/bottomless checkbook group.

A few years ago Keith Martin used to answer my e-mails and even help me look for cars! Those days are long gone -- he's even got a new wife. SCM is still a lot of fun every month, but I agree that now it's best for laughing at the silly money people are paying to out-bid the chandelier behind them. Staffers still turn up at events and will extend a friendly "show" subscription price to enthusiasts.

Corporate ownership, editorial boards, executive editiors and kowtowing to advertisers has killed much of automotive journalism. I enjoy what Keith has to say about anything automotive..

beretta,
It's still a nice mag. It's just a little discouraging when you find a neat little rag and slowly see it change into something else. When I first picked it up, it was moslty black & white text inside and every single cover showed a painting or fine artwork of a classic car or motorsport theme. Very unique.

latest issue i picked up included a comment about the Coppola 911 being bought via craigslist for 1/2 of the sale price (ebay sale reported in the mag) just a few months earlier. i took that as evidence that SCM is not your typical big corporate 'make everybody happy and just promote the hobby at all costs' magazine.

my favorite mags from my childhood (road & track in particular) are just crap any more. it's a shame to think there isn't much out there to offer a well rounded peek into the sports car world (both vintage and new).

I still get SCM but it's not what it used to be (was much more irreverant and cheeky)
Seems to me they blow more sunshine these days, to avoid offending perhaps My favorite car rag now is UK's 'CAR' - driver oriented but multi-dimensional, with info on topics from classic cars to the future of alternative fuels. EVO is good, too, but a bit more 'boy racer.' Would get both, but they are pricey so I limit myself to CAR. |

Good mag. I have also subscribed to if tons of times (1-2 years at a time). Gets old sometimes, but a nice publication with some excellent information...

Too much focus on which of the 19 optional colors of contrasting stitching to select on the Alcantara seats of your "bespoke" new DB9 in Octane for my plebian tastes.
If I had to pick a single best automotive periodical, it would be Motorsport. Stunning photography, and world class writers. Last month's focus on Jimmy Clark from numerous perspectives was just incredible. Publications go in cycles, but this is one that is definitely at the top of its game at this particular point in time. http://www.motorsportmagazine.co.uk/ Tim |

SCM online has an "affordable classics" feature. Good reading, they touch on everything from GTis to '80s Alfa GTVs. Unique, because most classic car magazines tend to focus on cars with six figure price tags.

Decent magazine but some of their "experts" are anything but that. The auction descriptions are sometimes pretty useless. They often seek to entertain, rather than inform, which I find annoying.
Since this is a Porsche BBS for the most part, I'll say that Jim Schrager knows the 356 and early 911 but sometimes gets off into left field with the later cars. He has a personal bias agianst some models and it shows. He also seems to think that you should always be into a car for less money than it's worth. I'd wager that many of the cars in his extensive collection of early 911s are what I would call dogs. I also find that they lag way behind the market on the valuation of certain cars, by somewhat ignoring the fact that not all cars are sold at auction, or even advertised for sale in any meaningful way. Lots of the good ones change hands directly between people in the car collecting hobby, or with a few well placed words from a broker. JR |

OWP thanks for the tip on 'affordable classics' that sounds right cool!

Everyone bringing up one of my favorite cars: 66-74 Alfa GTV. Does anyone know what gas mileage these babies get? Thinking of buying a fuel efficient VW Rabbit Deisel or something... (trying to go green -Monday thru Friday)...
