Burbank

I'm in Burbank for the next few days. Any of you Socal guys have any suggestions of some fun stuff to do?

Cdnone1 06-17-2008 03:30 PM

First thing you have to do is get out of Burbank if you want to have some fun

Seriously, what do you consider fun?
Cars, beach, food, people watching, driving, etc.

Find someone that knows Lenno and go look at his cars. Pretty close to the airport.

oldschoollear 06-17-2008 03:36 PM

Anything really . Museums, golf, outdoor activities, good restaurants, night life, good roads to ring out the rental car on. etc

ah Burbank isnt so bad, its a quite nice little town... you could go over to NBC studios on Alameda and see a show being taped or go down to Universal Studios and take the tour there, cruise the Sunset strip and hit some HWood night spots... take the 101 west to Las Virgines road and take the twisties down through the mountains to Mailbu and hit the beach... go to the Gettys Museum...or Griffith Observatory...there is a lot to do.

Take a quick trip over to Autobooks/Aerobooks. You will NOT be sorry. An exceptionally cool place for guys interested in cars.

Friday night is cruise night at Bob's Big Boy (in Burbank). From about 5 pm onwards. A couple Pelicans are known to go from time to time.

Mulholland is close by. (see Mul thread that's been going on for the past 18 months here in OT).

Ventura Blvd is lined with good Sushi restaurants (along with other types).

My favorite burger joint, Carneys, is on Ventura Blvd in Studio City.

Obviously the studios. Go see something get filmed for TV.

Good tip. Supercar Sunday. Take the Ventura Fwy west/north out to Calabasas. Exit Valley Circle. Just south of the freeway is a big minimall/supermarket parking lot. You'll recognize it by all the 6-figure cars in attendance.

Sherwood is also putting together a little Pelican get-together on Sunday morning, over in La Canada/Pasadena.

Burbank is a nice place, actually. Charming little airport, like something out of the 1940s. Drop me a PM w/ a cell# if you want, if time permits I'll take you on a little tour.

Gogar 06-17-2008 09:44 PM

+1 go to Bob's and eat a "Big Boy" burger.

Go to TRE and see if they'll show ya around . . . . .

I work for Disney in Burbank. PM me if you want a private tour of the studios. We're not open to the public like Universal Studios.

Wickd89 06-17-2008 10:05 PM

-Old Pasadena for dinner and bars (spanish tapas or mexican)
- Will Rogers museum in Griffith Park
- Tour ofWarner Brothers Studio in Burbank.
- TRE in Van Nuys (just out of principle)
If you have a car:
- Petersen Car Museum in LA (Fairfax and Wilshire)
- Getty Museums (Pacific Palisades &/or Brentwood/Bel Air)

Thanks for all the tips. "Super Car Sunday sounds fun, but we leave for SAC Sunday morning.

Burbank is a bit of a dump - I worked there for a few years when I was flying cargo (I was based out of there). There's some decent stuff in the old downtown area (BBG - Burbank Bar & Grill - is fun and a nice setting, etc.) Mostly though I'd have to say if you really want to have fun in southern CA, Burbank isn't the place to be. If you want the beach scene and just simple fun people watching, go to Venice. For clubs/nightlife/getting drunk I'd suggest Hermosa Beach. For a lot of restaurants and shopping and stuff in a pedestrian setting I'd suggest either Manhattan Beach or 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica (did I actually recommend Santa Monica to someone? Geez, I'm slipping. . .)

Some of Burbank is nice. Mostly it's just like the rest of the San Fernando Valley though - irrelevant.

HardDrive 06-18-2008 08:44 AM

The Getty museum is fantastic.

Porsche-O-Phile 06-18-2008 09:03 AM

Agreed.

Then again, given the budget that project had, it's hard to imagine ANYONE screwing it up. Nothing against Richard Meyer, but I'll bet with a billion-and-a-half budget I could have designed a pretty kick-ass place too. . .

A fellow(former)freight dog. We flew into KBUR. Is it me, or is the Airline ramp unusually close to 8/26? Do you still fly?

Porsche-O-Phile 06-18-2008 10:10 AM

Yea, I used to be one of those Amflight guys. Sadly I had to walk away from the flying - it just wasn't paying the bills. Haven't touched an airplane since - not by choice, but by virtue of cost. It's a lot easier to put hours in the logbook when someone else is footing the bill for it.

The commercial ramp is pretty gosh-darned close to 8/26, you're right. In fact 8/26 is pretty short/cramped in general (you might remember when a SWA flight ran off the end of 8 into the gas station across the street a couple years ago). That airport has a number of odd issues including the noise abatement issues, the big whompin' huge hill off the departure end (or missed approach path) of runway 8 (don't forget that right turn if you're goin' missed in the clouds!) and naturally the intersection. Fun airport in general.

I really do miss the flying - terribly at times - but I think I made the right call getting out. Looking at the future of air travel and air commerce in general as well as a glut of pilots coming back from Iraq with thousands of hours of turbine time, I'd consider the prospects for a lucrative career in commercial aviation for the "average guy" like me to be pretty bleak right now. But at least I can say I did it.
