Anybody have the 12 ton shop press from Harbor Freight?
Just checking to see if anyone has one of these to see what their opinion is.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=33497 There are alot of things I just plain wont buy from HF, but I think this one might be ok... Any input?? Thanks, Nick

For the price, it really doesn't matter if it is a POS. You can just buy a good one if it doesn't do the job.

Ha... weird coincidence. I just got done bolting this cheapo 10 ton press together 5 minutes ago. Tag says it is a Murphy H12J hydraulic shop press made in North Carolina
Bought it along with a whole bunch of other stuff for $50.00 at a garage sale of an old neighbor. These things aren't rocket science and they should work OK for the occasional user.

I bought a 20 ton press similar to one linked at the bottom of their page. It was only $40 more (vs $100 more) so it was an easier decision. The 12 ton is probably fine, but it seemed significantly weaker than the 20 ton frame.

I have that exact HF press for four years. It's fine. It has served me well, and more than payed for itself.
Think about it... It's angle-iron and a hydraulic jack. How much should it cost?

I have had that press for about 5 years.
It has worked great but be careful. You can damage crap when you least expect it.

I have one also. Toughest job I gave it was pressing out & in new wheel studs for my trailer. Worked fine. Just keep in mind that the jack is probably stronger than the frame.
My kids also loved to squish stuff with it when they were with me in the shop. My son thought it was cool to fold a penny in half. Now that he's older, his favorite tool is the plasma cutter. |

I have the 20-ton version, which I bought used. I swapped out the jack for the HF pneumatic version. I've gotten quite a bit of use out of it, and I love the convenience of the pneumatic jack.

HF gets no love.
Everything I've bought from there has served me well, even the power tools. The $30 impact wrench I bought works like a charm.
