Is it time to discuss the Electoral College here yet?
We all get caught up in the back and forth here on who's voting for whom, as if it really matters. It matters in some states, but not so much in others. Sure, an Electoral College victory can be blunted by a popular vote defeat. But the EC is really all that matters here. I thought the EC system would get revisited after the 2000 election, but of course, no one remembered it for very long.
Seems to me a lot of the most vocal folks here come from states that are already a lock for one or the other candidate. So our shouting doesn't mean too much. I live in AZ, so, of course, my POTUS vote will only matter in the popular count. Swing states are a whole different matter. I think Lendaddy's vote will cancel out Kachi22's in MI. I don't think Tobra and Sammy are gonna swing CA to the McCain column. Which others are truly up for grabs? MI, OH, PA, VA (this time), NM?

It takes three quarters of the states to pass a change in the Constitution. Why would the small states cut their own throats and get rid of the electoral college?

I would never expect that from the smaller states. However, I would think there'd be more of a movement by states to award their electoral votes proportionately. I believe CO and IA already do this, so it can be done below the federal level. I'd be kinda upset if I lived in a state that was always a lock for the party I disagree with the most. Winner takes all guarantees there will always be doubts and sore feelings.

This is how it used to look, but this time Obama is carving out a huge section of the Red for himself.
The Blues will always stay the same. It's called progress.

Ah, I was waiting for the voice of logic and rational thought. Thanks Dipso. You make every thread better.

Dippity Do does it again. If we could run the hippies, commies & illegal Mexicans out of those blue states, they might be salvageable.

Reagan wouldn't win CA today even if there were not a single fraudulent vote cast. CA is solidly in the Dem column. No reason to even campaign there for either party.

My first election after I moved back to Cali was when Mr Olympia won the Governatorship, every single thing I voted for on that ballot won, first time that happened ever. Usually swimming upstream here. There are actually people who think Jerry Brown is okay, as evidenced by his AG win, that Gavin Newsome is more than a pretty face and a nice haircut and that Willie Brown does not deserve to be in a penitentiary for the rest of his life.
