Wasn't someone looking for a nice 2002?

That is one beautiful 2002. I think this one may hit close to $20K.

Stunning!

Hey Sarc, did you ever get a different car? I'm loving the C36!

Don Plumley 09-04-2008 07:22 AM

Wow!

Hi Matt,
Funny you mentioned that since this week my car A.D.D has been pretty strong. I've been gravitating towards E34s again (reminds me most of my much loved E30) but since a good example seems few and far between I've been studying up on E39s (particularly 528 sport models).

Then leaving the office yesterday I happened on a spotless W210; black/black with some nice 17's that gave it a perfect stance. I don't know, I'd like something newer that will offer more safety protection for our little one but I just can't bring myself to have a car payment, which makes the E34 appealing. Depending on what my E30 will fetch, maybe a newer E39, W210 (or C36) is in the cards. One thing I must do is get some seat time in.

Or just call it a day and buy a Honda.

Every once in a while you see a car for sale and just wish you had some spare money laying around to grab it up. This is one of those times.

Don put it well.

Wow!

This E28 is pretty slick as well (personally I'd lose the graphics)

Pretty sweet. I'll give it a pass on the graphics, they're period Alpina so at least they're legit.

Just go drive some. I really liked my E34 540/6, but I like my C36 even more. I'm still finding little things that I marvel at, as well as how tightly it's screwed together. I give the W202 the edge over the E34 in build quality, hands down. The W210s I drove were very nice as well.

Of course, you have to decide if you are absolutely dedicated to getting a manual transmission. If you are, that rules out the MB. After years of only considering manual cars, I have to say I really don't mind the auto. It doesn't hurt that MB builds some of the best automatics in the car business.

You know, I think it's more of the Mercedes 'stigma' that comes with the car than the automatic box. I know, I know, I should care less of that, and I can surely deal with any good natured ribbing I'd get from co-works and friends, but recently I've had the 'rich yuppie BMW' card thrown in my face (for my $4,000 318is!) that has contributed to the estrangement of a very close family member.

Sad, really that a shiny piece of metal with 4 wheels can do that, but without getting into too much detail here, the fact that I drive a Benz won't help in any future 'negotiations' that take place (not that I see that happening anytime soon).

Good looking cars, though.

Seriously?! None of my business, but I can't help thinking there were bigger issues than your $4,000 E30.

It is funny how ignorant people are of car values. When my wife was working, she drove a 2004 Toyota 4Runner that we bought new. Sticker was $34k, she never had any comments on it. One day she drove my $7500 E34 540/6 to work, and had multiple "wow, somebody got a raise" comments. Morons. I always figure to hell with them, if somebody wants to judge me based on the car I drive they're too shallow to be worth my time anyway.

But I will admit, I replaced the "look at me" Mercedes hood star with a flat badge.;)

And there is my friend, the BMW is just a prop in the whole situation. Frankly, it's a story worthy of a Hollywood script that contains all the right ingredients; Happiness, Dishonesty, Obsession, Murder, Brainwashing and ultimately estrangement from a son that worshipped that ground his mother walked on.

No doubt a topic for PPOT one day, but until then I have to maintain a Don Draper like approach to the situation and move on.

My wife found this picture of our old 1979 318i that I picked up for $1200 back in 1992, at the time I think I was making $10 an hour as a drafter for a surveying company. The car was a mess mechanically and I slowly brought it back to 100% over 2 years and drove it a bunch after that, it was a great little car.

Once I got it roadworthy I took it to work one day and I will never forget my A-hole boss. He saw me pull up in it, and instead of being happy and asking me about the car he got pissed, and told me it was obvious he was paying me too much if I can afford a car like that.

In fear of never getting a raise again I began explaining I picked it up for $1200....

You are 100% correct about people not knowing anything about what a car is really worth and not looking much further than the badge.

I pulled up to a project site to meet with a client in my 911 and immediately the guy made a snotty comment about how it must be nice to drive around in an expensive sports car, I looked at his F350 Turbo diesel with it lift kit and all, I told him he could buy 3 of my cars for what he paid for that truck.

I have to see if I have any other pics of this car it was such a cool little car.

Just as well I was not bidding..... $32,100 .... very nice but I was not sure it would make $20K. Not that you could replicate it for that.

I love 2002s, a lot, but that is insane money for that car. For that kind of money, it's gotta be a tii, not a weber carbed car.

Hads930 09-07-2008 06:32 PM

Watched this auction very close today in the closing hour as I thought anything under 20K would be a very good buy. Can't help but think that there is a phantom bid, it goes from 18 and change to 32K in one bid when it had been seeing 200 to 1000 dollar increases over the past few days. This is exactly why I would not look for HONEST deals on ebay.

Rot 911 09-08-2008 05:34 AM

Wow, can't believe it went for $32K. I thought my $20k guess at the beginning of this thread was going to be a stretch.

azasadny 09-08-2008 04:25 PM

Gorgeous car!!

speeder 09-08-2008 09:43 PM

That's a really stupid price for that car. I's nice, but not special. Even at today's prices, $32k buys one hell of a nice early 911.
