Holy cow, when did we loose it the first time?
I've been going to Afghanistan on rotations since 2003. I must have missed the surrender ceremony.

When the Taliban controlled the country: September 1996 to October 2001. |

Jim,
Again, how did we loose the place? As far as I know, prior to the Soviets it was a monarchy and then a Soviet style dictatorship. The Soviets went in to stabilize the regime. The period between the exit of the Red Army and the rise of the Taliban was total anarchy. The country was divided between warlords. The Taliban was in essence just another organization built on the same model as the other factions positioning for supremacy. During that period Kabul was under constant artillery attack, therefore we didn't have an Embassy nor a consulate in the capitol city. The Taliban didn't seize control as much as they were handed power by the people. The population was tired of the war and banditry and the totalitarian style of the Taliban could effectively protect the people. I guess if you are speaking figuratively, when the monarchy was overthrown we pretty much left the country. So in a sense we lost the country at that moment. Great read-Afghanistan by Stephen Tanner. I always read it on the flight to Bagram. Jim S.
