Any one ever have Diverticulitis???

How did it turn out, what did you have to do???

Quote:
Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis is a condition in which pouches (diverticula) that form in the wall of the large intestine (colon) become inflamed or infected. Symptoms can include pain, fever, and other signs of infection and may last from a few hours to several days.
Diverticulitis is usually treated with a high-fiber diet, antibiotics for infection, and pain relievers. Hospitalization or even surgery to remove the diseased part of the colon may be necessary if complications such as an abscess or peritonitis develop or if repeated attacks are not helped by other treatment.

My Dad had several episodes with it a few years ago. He said it felt like someone was sticking a hot knife into his gut. You get a very acute/sharp pain that after watching him with it looked pretty excruciating. He would go to the ER, get on antibiotics of some sort and it would subside after a couple of days.

Nuts, anything with seeds or small hard particles of any kind must get axed from the diet (like the seeds on a hamburger bun, strawberries, etc.) They can get lodged in your diverticula and get infected. My Dad's response was "after you hit a certain age blah blah everyone gets it to one degree or another" but after about the 3rd or 4th flare up he wised up and refined his diet, did the Atkins thing and dropped about 45-50 lbs and I don't recall him having an issue with it for about 2-3 years now.

Then my Dad got run over in an off leash dog park by a Great Dane that mowed him down and blew his knee out...

My brother had it about five years ago, he had the polyps removed and had to quit eating peanuts and other legumes, as far as I know he is doing great, I will email him tomorrow, maybe I can put him in touch with you, otherwise I will get back to you to give you a better idea, and hopefully put your mind at ease.

I had two surgeries back in '85 because of it. Had a bit of rectal bleeding, thought it was 'roids. Then a belly ache that didn't go away, so thought it might be appendix. Drove myself to the hospital. I didn't know it, but because of infection the surgery took hours. Turned out it was a burst diverticuli. So, I was split from stem to stern, had to wear a baggie on my belly for a couple of months...then back in the hospital I went to have my shortened colon hooked back up.

Tell ya, nothing like living without one for a spell to make you appreciate your a-hole.

Those surgeries were no fun...a week in the hospital bed with each...no food while the colon healed. Very painful. So much so that if I had to go through the process again to stay alive? I'd think about it...

I'm on antibiotics now, have been for close to 2 weeks. I started feeling the pain while in CO. Thought I pulled a muscle working out, but a week after I got home, it was still hurting so I went to the doc because I was worried that it could be my appendix too. The meds seemed to be working, then the last day of my meds, another sharp pain followed by a very painful back pain, that was this past weekend. So I went back to the doc, got on stronger med & they are setting up a Cat Scan

Funny thing is, I don't eat any type of seeds, the only nuts, sometimes boiled peanuts and I don't eat spicy food

I still have no idea how I got it.

Thanks guys

It about about killed a good friend of mine. He ignored his Doc. suggestion to have a section of his intestine removed. Long story short, it ruptured while we were snowmobiling and it took us 30 hrs. to get him to a hospital.

Because of infection, he spent 5 weeks in the hosp. over the next 4 months, having 7 surgeries. Fever of up to 105 at times.....All because he didn't follow Doc. orders......

My Mom has it. I picked her up from the hospital after her scans and went through the stuff with the Doc. Like others have said, she was told to avoid certain foods.

She was also told to improve her diet, get much more fiber in it. That was the big theme. Fiber, Fiber, Fiber and reduce/eliminate processed foods and fast food. She lost a bunch of weight and hasn't had a problem in 2 years.

My money is on "You inherited it"

I see regular colonoscopies in your future. Pay attention to the diet stuff. I have also heard tomato seeds can set it off, along with the other stuff mentioned

I had it once. Antibiotics cleared it up. Silly things like the little seeds on hamburger buns can cause alot of grief.

Everytime I read a thread like this I have one thought permeate my brain....

Eat right. Exercise. Lose weight.

I feel terrible for you, but if it makes you feel any better I will be eating better because of this.

Byron, good luck with this...and remember, "an apple a day" is more than a saying...be sure to get a good daily dose of fruit fiber.

A friend of mine who regularly removes bits of peoples' colons tells me it is almost exclusively the result of a lifetime of low fiber and that it is virtually unheard of in populations with high fiber diets.
