Are we supposed to recognize that as something significant?

Jim, I think that is a bullet. Is your buddys tire shop in Mountain Home? I had a flat there and was directed to a tire shop on the outskirts of town. Showed up in my red p-car w/ TX plates and was expecting the worst. These 2 dudes reminded me of the guys from the dodge "that thing got a hemi" ad. Long story short, they fix the tire we shot the breeze, and it only cost me 2 dollars. Yes 2 dollars. Nice guys.

Looks like 7.62 to me.
How in the heck would the whole case get embedded like that - very odd. Did it detonate inside the tire? Can't really tell. I'd think that repeatedly being banged against the pavement would eventually cause the primer to fire if it were still a live round, meaning he might have a hole in his rim barrel too. |
Once i hit a piece of a leaf spring in the road (it was dark out) it flipped up & spiked itself up into the rocker panel & nailed the door shut. boy that was a great spark show until i got stopped.

I'm guessing that shop was Plumlees, somewhat of a family operation. Glad they took care of you, my buddy would have nicked you for a five at least. Not my best photo work, perhaps this one will clear up a bit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1222187362.jpg |
Five, OMG highway robbery. When I got back to H town and related the story to friends they said "thats why there is so much poverty in AR." Hope to be in your neck of the woods first week of Nov for the porsche gathering in Eureka Springs.

It doesn't look like it fired... in photo #2, it just looks like the bullet has been pounded down into the case (I think I see some copper and lead)... perhaps by the rim. Was it a low profile tire?
|
I'd have to check with Mark but assume it was a 'standard' tire.
Seems to be a .30-30 round, likely Remington. Likely was run over a few times before being picked up. Given the round nose of that cartridge should have made it more difficult to penetrate (compared to a FMJ) but then *#@% happens. The primer is mostly undamaged but doubt if much damage would result if it had ignited. Jim |
No it says "...hester "on what's left. that would be winchester. It also seems to have a long neck so maybe a 30-40 Krag round.

My guess is 30-30 (center below). Very commonly made round by Winchester as well.

Yes I would go with that looking at the length of the neck and a common round. 30-40 is not what you call a common round.
|
Cant really tell the scale of the round. It doesn't look big enough to be a 30-30 round. Maybe a .25? or .22Winmag....
|
I didn't do any measuring but it surely is a .30-30 round given that it's rimmed and the shallow neck angle (plus the advantage of having it in my hands). I didn't think it was a Winchester brand case as their primers are (or used to be) silver colored. I'll pull it in the morning and compare.

22 winmag is rimfire / not necked.
