Remington Speedmaster 552 - $270 Good?

I've been looking for a .22 for a little while and have just stumbled on this in a store. They have offered me what I think is a very good price on a well cared for rifle. This isn't one of the newer versions although I don't know the exact age.

Anyone care to weigh in with their general opinion of the price (without any pictures) and general opinion of these guns?

Thanks in advance.

Don't know the gun at all, but seems like a good deal:

Speedmasters are fine rifles. I have owned one for quite a while, and it is an old and trusted friend.

I'm not quite current on the market, but if it's in nice condition I think $270 is OK, probably not a screaming bargain unless the gun is excellent.

Check completed auctions on gunbroker.com for a good idea of current prices, and remember you will have to add shipping and FFL fee to the auction price.

If it is a Deluxe mdl it is worth it and is in near new condition.

However plain janes in near new to new are worth right around $200.

I've just been back to the store and looked at it again (after looking at prices on the web -Thanks Paul!). Looking more closely there were a couple of small scratches and grazes in the wood, nothing major. Generally it looked about 95%-plus decent. Here's the story...

It was a in a store that's closing down and they're selling off stock before an auction with a 10% discount on firearms. Earlier this evening I had been offered it for $295. Judging by the prices I found on the web I thought it was worth going back. I looked the gun over very carefully and stood there in front of the salesman procrastinating. Chatting with the guy I found out that he worked for the auction company and had been working for about 12 hours non-stop today so was pretty tired. With me still procrastinating he offered to drop the price to $285 so I counter offered $275, still with the 10% discount, and the deal was done.

But there's more. I didn't really pay attention when they rang up the price at the checkout, but looking at my receipt when I got home I got charged less than $200 out the door! I feel a bit guilty because I think they have either messed up the discount or completely undercharged me. Now I feel like I should go back and mention it - or should I just chalk it up as a lucky break?

For reference the last gun that Paul linked to here;

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=111908088

looks to be an identical model but the one I have is in much better condition.

There's the problem, I'm far too honest. Honest.

I suppose I could tell them that I think they made a mistake but Tabs said a plain Jane in near new to new was worth right around $200 so lets call it quits?

Current Blue Book Of Gun Values says $175 for new. This source should only be used as a guide, and is wrong in many cases. However when selling a gun, everybody loves to quote the prices listed in that book. SO.....
