Wow, weird. I always enjoyed his books.

Always loved The Andromeda Strain.

RIP

M.D. Holloway 11-05-2008 11:29 AM

I read most of his work. He will be missed.

that sucks...it always sucks when very creative and productive people die early in their 50s and 60s etc.

He was a big guy, like 6 foot 9 or so.

syncroid 11-05-2008 12:47 PM

What a shame. I was just in the book store this past weekend to see if he had anything new out.

carreraken 11-05-2008 03:06 PM

Bummer... I've read most of his books..

A good guy who had a realistic understanding of the environmental industry. One of the few truth tellers in "pop culture".:(

berettafan 11-05-2008 04:54 PM

Man that hurts. Fantastic writer, just fantastic.

Stephen King flips out, Grisham has the depth of a kiddie pool, Clancy decides to start writing encyclopedias for military equipment junkies and dimwits like the guy that wrote 'along came a spider' are considered great writers. Yet Michael Crichton, one of the best fiction writers i have ever read is gone.

Truly a sad day.

Reading Jurassic Park before the movie was made was truly a fantastic experience. creating that massive world in your own head.....god that was fun.

I was shocked when I saw this. Like berettafan, he was one of the better writers. Guess I'll have to keep hoping for John Steakley to write another book.

Very sad. R.I.P.

I read "The Great Train Robbery" probably 20-25 years ago and it is a GREAT read, a great story based in truth, but dramatized of course. If you've never read it, do yourself a favor and pick it up. He was a M.D. in case some of you did'nt know. A brilliant mind AND terrifically creative; not a bad combination huh?

too bad, good writer, I remember when I was reading Andromeda Strain my Mom told me he was a doctor. Sort of makes sense with some of the stuff he wrote

alf 11-06-2008 04:10 AM

RIP, brilliant mind.

Read several of his books and like all of them. Now reading his Travels book. Sort of a biography.

jhynesrockmtn 11-06-2008 06:32 AM

Brilliant guy. The bio I read said he sold the Andromeda Strain while he was in medical school. He finished but never practiced, his writing career having taken off. It said he went to medical school because he couldn't play basketball and didn't think he could make a living as a writer.

Jeff964 11-06-2008 07:28 AM

What kind of cancer did he die of? RIP
