GPS Recommendations

I want to get a GPS unit for my mother-in-law for Xmas. I'd like to try to keep it under $200 if possible. She isn't very tech savvy, so something easy to use is a must. She is very active & travels a lot. I would like something with good spoken street directions that's also easy to read & hear.

I want to buy it at a local store even though I see great deals online. If she doesn't like it she can return it with the gift receipt for something else. I'll probable go to Costco, Best Buy, Target, ect. Right now Garmin is at the top of the list, closely followed by Tom Tom. Do you guys have any experience on what to buy & what to avoid?

87coupe 12-03-2008 06:15 PM

Tom Tom has a pretty easy to use interface, as does Garmin and Magellan. IMO, Tom Tom is probably the simplest. I own a Navman which is the exact opposite, I think they intentionally made it hard to use :p

I just went through this process a couple of weeks ago for myself. Now I am holding off because the prices are dropping dramatically. All the reviews I read (easily over 50) places the Garmin Nuvi heads above the 2nd place contender which is TomTom. I will be getting the 755T, but for your MIL, in the price range you want, get the Garmin Nuvi 255W. Amazon has it for $215.00 with free shipping. The reviewers love it. Read about it here: http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-255W-4-3-Inch-Widescreen-Navigator/dp/B0015EWMX8/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1228356873& sr=8-2

Thanks for the replies! I haven't been to Costco yet, but went to a few other stores & they all seem to have slightly different variations of the same unit. I found this one at Costco online, but don't know if I can get it in the store & if it will have the 2009 maps.

The nice thing about costco online is that you can return an item at the store if needed.

I have a Garmin Nuvi (think it is the 200) and it is easy to use and has proven to be accurate. My model doesn't speak street names, but I suspect the newer models around $200 will have that feature.

Rot 911 12-03-2008 06:41 PM

The 750 will not have the 2009 maps. The Nuvi series ending in "0" are the 2007 models and the ones ending in "5" are the 2008 models. Oh and Amazon has it for $222.00 without the "rebate."

A few years ago my wife bought me a Magellen and I really liked it, but it literally fell apart in less than a year. It was an early model and was huge and cluncky, and apparently not destined to last long. but I really liked it.

This year I bought a Tom Tom 1 series because it was cheap and offered some features. I figured they were all pretty much the same. In retrospect I wish I had not bought a Tom Tom and I wish I spent a little more. Apparently there are two competing map making companies in the world. One is better in the US, the other is better in Europe. Tom Toms uses the one that is better in Europe, and the mapping software is not as good as the competitors. It always gets me there, but it routinely takes me the long way. It's calculations of what the "fastest" way to get somewhere is often strange at best. I would stick with the companies that use the other routing software. Do a web search and you should see what I mean. Mine also takes a long time to cycle up. It's frustrating when you want to take off in an unframiliar area and you need the GPS to tell you which way to start. Or it loses contact with the satelite and you're wondering where the next turn is.

Get one that announces the street by name. It really makes a difference. Spend the extra to get the best maps available and the better software. Nothing is more frustrating than counting on your GPS and getting almost, but not quite where you want to go. If you pay more to get what you really need you'll get a better value for your money.

Check out Tigerdirect.com They usually have the best prices on the web.

Got a Garmin on sale at Walmart for $99

Don Plumley 12-03-2008 08:03 PM

On my third garmin - love them (one was stolen, the second was replaced out of warranty by Garmin).

carreradpt 12-03-2008 08:59 PM

I suggest getting the biggest screen for the best price. The 4.3" screen is much better than a 3.5" screen. The Garmin 205W is pretty good, just gave it to a good friend. It was on sale everwhere it seemed. Paid $160 for it.

BReif61 12-04-2008 04:20 AM

I bought my girlfriend the Garmin Nuvi 205. She uses it fine, which means anyone can handle it.

Recently saw them at Target for ~$120, down from $200.

cantdrv55 12-04-2008 12:36 PM

I have used several different brands as I tend to rent vehicles often. Garmin is by far the easiest and has the fastest link up to satellite. Magellan is slow and confusing. Tom Tom is OK but still slower than Garmin, which has the market share. The Street Pilot Garmin models are the best, IMO. The Nuvis are cool because most have a slim design but they have a significant design flaw. The volume control is embedded in the software, meaning you have to press screen icons to adjust the volume, which means you have to take your eyes off the road.

The Street Pilots have a scroll whatchamacallit off to the side for volume control. It's so handy. My mother bought a Nuvi and now regrets it because of the volume control. Sometimes it's too loud, other times she can barely hear it. Each time she needs to adjust it, she asks her passenger to assist her so she won't have to take her eyes off the road.

Schrup 12-04-2008 03:53 PM

Thanks for the input. I think I'm leaning toward the Garmin Nuvi 255W. Now I have to find it in a local store for as cheap as possible.

ruf-porsche 12-04-2008 04:05 PM

Garmin, they have the best maps.

m21sniper 12-04-2008 04:06 PM

Me and my partner both use a Magellan. They work perfectly fine.

He has an older Garmin too, but neither one of us likes it as much as the Magellan.

As long as she's hot :D

Nuvi? Purchased one with Hilton honor points. I still find pleasure knowing I smashed the damn thing on the ground. It sucked. Although it was kinda hot when I had her speaking french ;)

VincentVega 12-04-2008 08:08 PM

X2 on Magellan. I picked up from Costco for ~$150 a few months ago. Spring for one with text to speech, I think most have it now.

Do you like this mother-in-law, or not? If the latter, then I suggest the Garmin Nuvi 350. I think Cesiro had the same model, and similarly didn't like it. Not terribly reliable. Actually, the problem is that it sometimes cannot find the address/store you type in. If I actually have to get somewhere important, I find that I double cross reference the directions with Yahoo or Google maps. The unit I have is only useful if it's not terribly important for you to actually get to the address you're looking for.

Yes, she is a great lady. I went out to a few brick & mortar stores today & it appears that the Garmin 255W is gonna be out of my price range. I did find the Tom Tom 330S & the Magellan RM 1412 for $250 which seem to fit the bill. I'll do some more research this weekend & see what shakes out. Thanks again.

Racerbvd 12-05-2008 08:42 AM

I got a Magellen with the Conti Tires (a Pro-mo they were doing when the Jag needed new tires) and have been pretty happy with it.

carreraken 12-05-2008 09:31 AM

My Garmin Nuvi 350 works great for my needs.

SLO-BOB 12-05-2008 04:31 PM

I have a Magellan Roadmate - it sucks. It routes poorly, sometimes sending one in one direction for miles only to have us U-turn and double back. This has happened a few times. It has also routed us (by us I mean my employees who apparently have no sense of direction, nor the inclination to look at a map) miles (as in hundreds) out of the way. One time a two hour ride was turned into an 8 hour ride. There are no "fixes" according to the Magellan website. Never again.

I tried a Tom-Tom but returned it immediately. It sucks too. As mentioned by others, the North American maps are not so great. Forget about navigating around Canada. Even though it has the maps for Canada, they are woefully inadequate.

Stick with Garmin. Much, much better maps. I was just at Costco and they had one for $169.00. I think it was the 250W. Maybe not the latest greatest, but still better than even the best Tom-Tom or Magellan because no matter how many bells and whistles you ad, if the maps suck, the maps suck.

K.B. 12-05-2008 08:50 PM

New maps come out about April. (2009 map came out last April) That is when the newest models come out too. Get one with the latest map only. Prices drop on models from that date on. They keep getting faster and better. I have had 2 garmins now and my daughter has had a garmin and a TomTom. They are both comparable. The nuvi 255w was $299 in April and is down to about $225 or so now. Same for the Tomtom one xl 330s. They were similar new models that came out in April w 4.3" screens.

I wonder how I got along without a GPS now that I have used them. They have saved me gas and time enough to pay for themselves. I would not get a cheaper model to save a few bucks.

They are very handy for finding things like food when you are on a trip. No more wondering how far off the exit the place is. No more stopping to ask directions, No more getting lost while on a detour. Phone numbers are given to call businesses with your cell.

The only negative is, they do attract theft if you leave it in your vehicle.

My wife used my company car to go to the mall a few months back and when she returned, the Garmin GPS was still there but my Valentine 1 was gone.

You can buy brand new 255s all day long on Ebay for $199.00 and "Buy It Now". I know you wanted to buy local, but that's not where the deals are. If you buy today you would likely have it by weds.

Someone said the TomTom and Garmin are comparable. Maybe until you plug in an address that doesn't exist on the TomTom map. It's common knowledge that the TomTom maps are inferior. I wouldn't take one for free.

If you haven't already, check for yourself on Cnet.com or GPSreview.com. Good info there.

K.B. 12-06-2008 04:31 PM

GARMIN uses NAVTEQ maps. Navteq was bought by Nokia for 8.1 billion dollars. Nokia's makes its own brand GPS is called Navigon.

TomTom gets their map data from TeleAtlas (same place Google does), not from Navteq. Navteq had approached Garmin when Garmin had made a higher offer than TomTom to purchase TeleAtlas. Navteq made a long term deal to supply their maps to Garmin to get them to cancel the offer for the purchase of TeleAtlas.

Here is a link http://www.gpsreview.net/navteq-vs-tele-atlas/ to compare the two. They are indeed very similar. I have found errors in each. Here is one graph that compares them a year and a half ago.

I agree that bigger is much better for ease of programming etc., but how much better is for actual driving? I've used, but never owned, a car GPS. I do own a few hand held Garmins. The viewing area of widescreen Garmins are 1 inch wider, but only .11 inch taller than non-w units.

Isn't the car almost always heading to the top of screen? So while the view is much wider, the view of where you actually heading is almost the same for either standard or widescreen. Wouldn't it make more sense to set the widescreen view 90 degrees? It would look odd, but be more useful to see what is coming up ahead rather than what is off to the sides. We'd have to call it the Tallscreen view. Of course it would block visibility, especially with a windshield mount.

I'm leaning toward buying the wife the Garmin nuvi 360 with current maps.

Z-man 12-08-2008 10:33 AM

You may want to consider the Mio-brand. Not as well known in the USA as Garmin and TomTom, but it works very well. I bought my wife one a couple of years ago, and she loves it! We like it so much, I then bought my mom-in-law and my sister Mio's. C230 model, IIRC.

Just a counterpoint...

I got the low-end Tomtom 130 and this thing is just amazing!!
For $100 bucks you can't go wrong.
The higher-end do more stuff like bluetooth and other stuff that you don't really need, I think...

If you're on a budget and for a solid GPS the tomtom 130 is perfect

It does speaks, plan routes, POI, etc..

Schrup 12-26-2008 10:01 AM

I bought her a Garmin nüvi 780 from Best Buy for $269. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=13479

It was a bit more than I wanted to spend, but she's worth it. She was quite pleased. Her & her new boyfriend got horribly lost a couple weeks ago, so it turns out that it is a timely gift. I'm going over to help her get it set up today. Garmin told me that the 2009 maps are a free download within 30 days of registering online. For $300, you would think they would include a carrying case, oh well.

SLO-BOB 12-26-2008 02:11 PM

A very nice choice. Good price too.
