John Denver--PBS Special

I found a cool PBS special on John D. tonight.

What a great songwriter. Kinda wierd, yeah but he WAS a Porsche guy.

Annie's Song is such a powerful melody. My best friend sang this for my little sister and her husband at their wedding.

Her husband took his own life just after they were married for 1 year.

About 20 or so years ago, when they were recording a song for African relief (We Are The World?) in New York, one of the group of assembled artists was quoted as saying, "You know, if a meteor fell on this place right now: John Denver would be back on top."

I did "Annie's Song" at our wedding 32 years ago. Great song.

Somebody did a version of his "Leaving On A Jet Plane" a couple of years back. Another song with legs.

Thanks for the songs, John.

I saw the same show on PBS, yeah the guy was a great singer/song writer/guitar player.

I even played a few of his songs back in the day.

Kind of weird seeing as I was listening mostly to Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd type music at the time.

Actually was a very accomplished pilot. Thousands of hours of flight time. Instrument rated. Multi-engine and Jet qualified.

The plane he was in had been altered and ran out of fuel. No alcohol or drugs in his system. May have been pilot error, though.

And yes, very accomplished songwriter too.

either a long ez or a vari-ez. he was thinking of buying the plane and had taken it up for a test. the owner had modified it. the lever to switch tanks is normally located below the seat. this plane had it over the right shoulder. denver did something dumb, but that happens to many pilots with enough hours. he ran out of fuel. they figure he could have got it restarted in time if not for that.

met him at oshkosh when i was seven or so. he had a pitts special then. if he'd been a bad pilot, that's the plane that would have killed him.

Lots of people bad mouthed him as being a plastic poser because he put a gasoline underground storage tank on his property during one of the gas shortages. So what, if I had the money, I'd have done the same thing. And so what if he changed his last name to Denver, from Dusseldorf or something like that. Geraldo Rivera's real name is Jerry Rivers of something like that. Although Geraldo is a real poser.

John Denver was a great songwriter, a good singer, and a very good entertainer. I was and still am a big fan of his work, but not of the man.
In real life he was a bit of a poser, pseudo-intellectual who took himself a little too seriously with all his big words, over the top dramatic descriptions designed to make others think he was more intelligent and deep than he really was. He could have been a college professor
