Angry For crying out loud!!! Homonyms...

Loose = the word you use when something isn't tight enough.

Lose = the word you use when you misplace something.

Here is a trick- the one with two "o"s is too loose. The one with one "o" has a lost o.

You can't loose a job.

Yes, word usage these days is horrible.

I hate to take this OT, but.

The breaks on my car our vary loud these days. If you now how to keep them from squeeling, please let me know. There to loud!! I'd like to insure that they are quite, but I don't want the quite ones to make my car stop further.

Holy crap, that bugs the crap out of me, too.

I get emails from colleagues with these words misused.

My criteria for being educated (many PhD's fail):

The correct use of:

"good" and "well."

"We're doing good" makes me cringe.

dear and deer are homonyms.

Loose \ˈlüs\ and lose \ˈlüz\ are not.

I'm not sure that I get them correct 100% of the time, but I think I'm close. I here lots of folks using well when they should be using good which is more surprising than vice versa too me.

You know, I almost looked "homonym" up to confirm that the pronunciation being the same is part of the definition, but I didn't.

Give me a brake. Their's no reason to loose it. Using the wrong word is something you should be able to bare.

"Adverbs! Where did the damn adverbs go?"

One rumor I heard was that the Secret Service has confiscated all of them to save President Bush from further verbal embarrassment.

How about effect and affect. A lot of people have a hard time with these.

Sample: The policy must be in effect before it will affect me.
