New evidence on Antarctic warming

Shucks I better get down there with my superchared Hummer H2 before the ice is gone and I can't do a scenic tour there.

mattdavis11 01-21-2009 07:02 PM

I'll do my part to save us from another ice age. I think I'll drive the land cruiser tomorrow.

stealthn 01-21-2009 07:19 PM

OH NO! it's warmed up .6 degrees in 50 years!?

What's going to happen to the poor penguins if the temperature goes up to -49F?

The humanity of it all....I need a drink

"A much bigger question is whether the new analysis of Antarctic warming heralds any major melting in the West Antarctic ice sheet, which could lead to big changes in sea level and global impacts."

idontknow 01-21-2009 08:51 PM

This new evidence you noted in the thread title was charted some 9 years ago.
From:http://www.daviesand.com/Choices/Precautionary_Planning/New_Data/
http://www.daviesand.com/Choices/Pre.../IceCores1.gif

Looking at that chart, I can't help but see a pattern. Temperature & CO2 spike up, and slowly drop back down. Without human intervention. I also can't help but see that the antarctic ice has been almost 2 degrees warmer in the past and still survived. Where did all those poor penguins go when their habitat was destroyed at least 3 times before?

I know, shallow arguments. But at least I'm providing some counterpoint and not another comment to a comment.

Trouble is, Is when some one pays them to find a problem..they DAM well will find it, write endless books papers reports about it..That is the problem with agendas
What I cant figure out -if Water freezes at (what ever salt ice water freezes at) Is it not still frozen if you raise the temp a few deg. ?

boba 01-21-2009 08:58 PM

I'm still waiting for someone to tell us what is the correct Temp for the Earth.SmileWavy

you must have missed the part about sea levels & flooding...

idontknow - did you see the huge spike in CO2 (in red) at the RH side of your graph -- that is from us. Don't expect it to drop back down unless we change the way we do things...

cantdrv55 01-21-2009 11:00 PM

Fools! It isn't the penguins we should be worrying about. It's the "Thing".

When it happens, I don't want to hear (and won't hear) a damned thing about not having time to move. They ought to be packing up in Venice right now, correct?

lendaddy 01-22-2009 05:28 AM

I'd be more impressed with evidence that the temperature had remained perfectly constant over any 50 year period in history.

not enough pirates in the southern hemisphere. most of the booty is up north.

Rikao4 01-22-2009 05:39 AM

I know some good A/C guy's that can hook those penguins right up..

So your saying that C02 and temp do not have a linear relationship.

I'd be more worried on finding out who was driving SUV's 125,000 years ago - we need to talk to those folks.

In reality I think we need to be more worried about that Asteroid 2006 XG1 in 2041 that's supposed to pass between us and the moon. Now that could raise the sea levels - talk about surf's up.

"Floods have been recorded in Venice since the 13th Century. However they are becoming more frequent and more severe as global sea levels begin to rise. The highest flooding event recorded in Venice was in 1966 when waters rose to 193cm (76 inches). Yesterday the waters rose to 156cm (61 inches). They are also becoming more frequent. In 1900 Saint Marks Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded approximately 10 times per year. Today however this has risen to more than 60 times per year."

source (questionable I will admit) Venice

But Venice is a poor example of anything. The city is sinking. The lagoon is rising. And it's Italian . . .
