Ralph's Grocery Store BS

We usually shop at Vons. Tonight I am lazy and peruse the Ralph's prepared premade meals. They have some nice choices for cheap, so I grab a penne with veggies and take it home. The tag says it expires 1/27. My fiancee pulls that tag off to find one underneath that says 1/25. WTF. they said it was "mismarked" and gave me my money back. Big deal. Don't shop at Ralphs.

slodave 01-26-2009 08:26 PM

I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. It's not like they hire top executives to bag and label items :).

I did boycott the Ralph's down the street from me for about a year though. The deli counter was supposed to be open until 8pm, they closed it when ever they felt like it. One of the managers didn't really care when I brought it to her attention. She is no longer there and I shop there again.

The ralph's we have in our neighborhood is just lame. I always have to wait in a line 10 people long. I hate it...

I grew up bagging groceries and that store just rubs me the wrong way. I only shop there for cat food and only if the cookes down the street is closed. The cookes is lame because they have high prices but I like the down home feel of it so I don't mind going there when I am short on time.

We price matched our normal shopping between Ralph's and Whole Foods trying to buy similar if not the same stuff. Whole foods didn't cost any more and the quality of the meat we buy is better. So, we shop at the uppity whole foods. Oh, and at the uppity whole foods I am almost always 'next!'

Such is life.

The Ralph's here is pretty good with opening up registers - most of the time. They also installed four of those U-check thingies recently.

Eh, I'll take what I can get. It's too convenient.

therotman 01-26-2009 09:56 PM

Those dates don't mean anything they are just made up by the food manufacturer- they could have put Feb 31.

Costco, Trader Joe's, the local fruit and veggie stand and some hunting / gathering is where we get 95% of our food supplies.

I always wonder what makes the Ralph's and Albertsons so much more expensive? Is it the union labor? The polished apples piled in pyramids?

You've never shopped at Gelson's, have you?

We shop at a place called PCC. Whole Foods are corporate facists compared to this place. PCC encourages people to bring in their own containers from home. You get to see the true left wing lunatic fringe up close.

It's actually encouraged down here too. Ralph's offers me 5 points for every bag I reuse. The points can be redeemed after a certain point. I keep forgetting to bring my bags back :(

I usually do the Trader Joe's, Pavillions and if in a pinch Whole foods although I hate spending $150 and walking out with a bag of groceries. I've recently been to a Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market and they're good although only on the west coast. Owned by an English company Tesco.

If I'm going to scan and bag it myself, I want a discount.

Porsche-O-Phile 01-27-2009 12:51 PM

Ralph? Like "puke"? umm. No.

Trader Joes here.

I refuse to shop at one of those stores (like Ralphs or Vons) where you have to have one of their stupid "club" cards in order to get a reasonable price on things. Effin' stupid. If you're willing to sell the gawddamn jar of peanut butter to Person "A" for $2.00, why the hell are you going to try to sell Person "B" the same jar for $3.00? You want a consumer profile? Read your own register journal receipts that tell you what they just bought. There's your profile for ya'. I'm certainly not giving them a way to link it to me personally and yes, I'll gladly take my business elsewhere over it.

gprsh924 01-27-2009 12:59 PM

Trader Joes is great for some stuff, but it is unbelievably expensive for other stuff.

Jeff you know that when you go through the line you can just ask them to swipe the club card for you, right? I have never been a grocery store that didn't do that for me.

Porsche-O-Phile 01-27-2009 01:05 PM

Probably true, but it makes you wonder what the point is then and frankly their prices aren't all that much different from T.J.'s. Plus why reward their stupid tactic anyway? It's just annoying.

Jeff,

100+ I hate that STUPID card crap too! What the heck do people think that card is doing for them. The clerk says 'With our card you get a discount" I tell them "discount my azz", the only reason you do this is to collect data on people and sell it or give it to the FBI or anyone willing to pay for it. If they give it too everybody, why do you need it. The moron clerk will say"To get the lower price". What a forkin democrat!!!!! Then they try the inventory lie. Anyway- Ralph's is an expensive weird store full of intentionally mismarked items. Ever look at your receipt and say "Thats not the right price its supposed to be $1.99 not $3.99" Just about every time I ever went there.. CVS has that card crap too. I go in there once or twice a week to buy beer because they have the best prices and they have learned not to ask me for the card (It doesn't give you a discount anyway).

Sorry for the rant, but Ralph's blows and Von's sucks also!

Bob

I refuse to shop at any store that has a card. Staters was going to try that crap too. I told the manager that if he was interested in loosing about $250.00 a week in grocery sales try it. I told him I refuse to buy where you need a stinking data collection card and don't start with the discount nonsense. You can tell they know you know whats up! Auto Zone and Best Buy have tried that crap too. "Rewards card" Those little girls behind the register who have the RIGHT to vote for POTUS believe that the card gives you a discount. They seem annoyed when you tell them the truth...

craigster59 01-27-2009 01:44 PM

When shopping at Ralphs or Vons (or any "card" store) I just punch ny number into the keypad (805) 555-1212. Pretty much works for anyones area code.

Or Bristol Farms.

Amazing how worked up some get over groceries. I think the deli sections of the Ralphs, Vons, etc., is pretty good. I lived on that stuff for 3 months last year when I worked out of town. That and the garbage truck. Maybe that's why I thought the store was so good. ;)

tabs 01-27-2009 03:12 PM

No one who has ever worked for Ralphs has liked that company...

Icemaster 01-27-2009 03:45 PM

I'm impressed. I guess you being the second coming and all I should have assumed that you knew/know every single employee of Ralph's. Ever.

Wow Tabs. Your powers amaze me.
