So long Saab...
If there is any reason for a car line to be gone, it's Saab. Bye bye.
Well, back in the day, they made some cars that were, at least, challenging. Trying to find where to put the ignition key should be a priceless memory for many.
My partner has a 96 Saab 900 turbo, it's a great car. Rides great, handles well, good acceleration, 140ish top end, fine leather interior....what's not to like?

Yeah, aside from weird ergonomics, what is Saab know for? They really are a mediocre car line.
Having lived in Boston for several years, I think I can safely say that about a quarter of New England will be mourning any demise of Saab.
Both my '97 900SE and '93 9000 Aero were excellent cars. Over 200 HP, 30 MPG, scary quick on the highway, easy to work on, and a HUGE amount of space inside. There's more stories than I can count of owner hauling home a fridge or washing machine using their hatchback Saab. Were they not FWD, they would have been nearly perfect. Even at 235k my 9000 didn't burn a drop of oil and shifted perfectly, with no internal work to either. Great cars, too bad GM made them a bit generic and reduced the quality.
had an 83 turbo. lots of porsche-like character, especially the babyblue interior. loved that car. one of the last car companies that made unique machines. oh well
Hopefully they can just ditch GM and re-emerge as a separate company.

Maybe we could do a group buy, and purchase Saab.
For all the reasons Matt outlines, the Saab was a great car. Remember, it was the rally car for a very long time. The beauty of it was its ugliness - just like the 911. :D It's my belief the brand started going downhill after GM bought it. But it just figures... The Mad Max franchise went downhill after Warner Bros. bought it -- and killed it. Saab goes downhill after GM buys it -- and kills it. Lesson: don't sell your brand to dollar-oriented, greedy American Corporations. |

I happened to love the 99EMS from backin the late 70's...tough car!
Had a 99EMS, 2 900 Turbos and an SPG, all before GM turned them into Opels with SAAB grilles.
They were great cars. The name SAAB stand for (Loosely, in English) SAAB Aircraft manufacturing company. Their AB is like our Inc. They built aircraft in WWII but decided they needed to get into autos, too, after the war was over. Also still build SCANIA trucks, I think. |
Thank god, I was hoping this would happen. It was either SAAB or Pontiac. They made the right choice.
SAAB made incredible cars in the late '70s (99 turbo) and the '80s (900 turbo). I nearly pulled the trigger but could not afford them at the time. They were light years better than anything put out by Detroit at the time.

GM kills off another car company. Just like the old days.
