spoilers, duh.

My prediction: Ben killed Penny. Remember, after Widmore's men killed Alex, Ben said, "he broke the rules," and vowed revenge. As soon as he saw Desmond at Farraday's mother's place, he knew he had his chance. He called Jack from a marina. Case closed. The cuts and bruises are from Desmond's attempts to protect her.

Desmond will drop off little Charlie with Charles Widmore and return to the Island to kill Ben.

Interesting that - on the plane - Ben said that he learned to read from his mother. Obviously not his birth mother and he didn't seem to have a mother when he came on the island with his Dad during the Dharma days...

Is Daniel Farraday Charlotte's father? He said he loved her during that scene with the H-bomb folks and at the time I assumed he meant in a romantic way, but maybe he meant in a fatherly way?

Thinking about it for a minute, I bet you're right - Ben probably killed Penny.

Something else I saw a few episodes ago that has bugged me. Remember the scene where they are filming the Dharma orientation video and the guy (I forget his name) gets called away to go down into the tunnel? Well, I would have sworn that the cameraman filming the video was Sawyer. I wrote it off as my imagination until last night when Jin climbs out of the VW bus...

Some folks on lostpedia had said Faraday, but I just rewatched the first few minutes on ABC's site and yeah, it does look like Sawyer. With a mustache.

Marvin Candles bumps into Faraday in the tunnel, but I did not see the camera man. They made it quite clear that Faraday was on the island when the frozen wheel was discovered.

Another prediction:

The Island is a machine, and is "created" in the future (end of Season Six?) as the world's first Time Machine (maybe invented by Farraday?) and sent back in time. The "Others" are the guardians of the Island (a la the Knights Templar), and the Island's control center is the Temple that the Smoke Monster guards vigilantly.

My friend Shannon, who is a serious Christian and really into C.S. Lewis's work, also tells me that this season of LOST has many Narnia parallels. For example, Charlotte's full name is Charlotte S. Lewis (CS Lewis), and if Penny was murdered and Desmond leaves little Charlie with Widmore, this closely follows details from the novel "Prince Caspian".

Also, consider the episode's title: 316. Apparently, if you read John 3:16, there is a passage about "being lost", and the chapter in "Prince Caspian" in which page 316 resides is called "How they got off the island." I haven't checked in on all these details yet, so they might not all be accurate. If they are, though, the amount of attention to detail put into this show is astounding.

Ben Linus doesn't know as much about the island as we'd tend to believe.

Faraday and Richard are the key to everything.

I think you're right about Richard. He shows up in way too many places (and times).

Yeah, I get the feeling more and more that Ben Linus is just a chess piece - albeit a powerful one (rook?) - in the whole game of the Island... I somewhat agree that Farraday and Richard might be the keys to everything, although a wrinkle appeared in this theory when Richard DIDN'T know John Locke in circa 1954; this threw me for a loop.

Well, when the original Flight 815 crashed, there was a US marshal escorting a prisoner (Kate); since they are trying to recreate the situation as much as possible, it only makes sense to have another one (Sayid). My guess is that Ben arranged for Sayid to be arrested for his multiple assassinations and transported (back to Iraq, with Guam as a layover)? But this is a detail that might take awhile to unfold.

My guess is that someone got ahold of Aaron and threatened murder unless Kate went back to the Island.

One thread that I'm sure will get explored later is the psychic's warning to Claire that "Nobody can raise Aaron except you!". Makes me wonder - might Aaron turn out to be the anti-Christ, or the next Hitler or something?
