Big brother in AZ?

What the heck is up with all the radar cameras in Arizona?

Drove through today for the first time in a while, they have radar cameras set up every 5 miles on the 10 through Phoenix.
I like my perfect driving record so I went 1 mph under the limit and everyone passed me and looked at me like i was an idiot.

How much over the limit do you have to go before they nail you?

I'm all for obeying the law, but this is too much even for me.

I heard that you have to be doing 10 over but I have not received my ticket in the mail yet so either they didn't have the camera set up yet or it is 15 over? :)

I was shocked to see those cameras in AZ before CA! I was on the 10 as well near Gilbert.

Yeah, they are set to trip at 11 mph over. Most folks with out-of-state plates don't worry about it, as they are civil matters. If you don't reply or pay the fine, a process server will try and contact you 3 times within 120 days. After that, it disappears. They are not going to send a process server to Cali for a camera ticket. Even if you are 40+ over the limit (criminal speed), it is still not a criminally punishable offense as long as the only thing that caught you was the camera.

P.S. Next time you are passing through, give a few of us locals a shout! SmileWavy

I was rolling 10N thru Tuc...they had cops in the median every 6 miles. Basically hauled ass till i could make out a faint white mark in the middle and then throttle back. As an aside...WTF is it w/ Tucson and highway construction. I've hunted out there for 20 years, and EVERY...not just most...EVERY F'in time they have a 10-15 mile stretch under construction. CharlesK????

yeap they are going to the same lay out as the phoenix freeway... pretty dumb that they have only 2 lanes and no median!!

lowyder993s 02-23-2009 08:13 PM

Good Gravy...I'll roll thru at 9 p.m. and STILL get in a wad of traffic...easily adds 15-20 min to the commute, but much more to the stress of trying to relax and enjoy the Az. desert in the winter time.

Rick Lee 02-23-2009 10:12 PM

I heard today that, if they clock you at 20+ over, you don't get a ticket, as the tickets are only for civil matters and 20+ over is criminal. I just put my sun visor down when I approach a camera. If they can't make out the driver's face, they don't mail a ticket. If they do mail a ticket, I'll dodge the process server for a few mos.

Axeman 02-23-2009 11:52 PM

I got nailed by one of them on Dec 31st coming back from Cali and was furious! I've sent a very angry letter to the Highway Safety Division to tell them that they're basically a bunch of fascists!
The friggin' ticket cost me $181 and I told them that I would make sure the city of Phoenix and state of AZ does not get a single dollar out of my pocket. I will buy everything out of state/online/etc so they don't make anymore money off of me. The cameras are set to trip at 11mph over the speed limit and 6mph in school zones. There are thousands of people complaining about them and it sounds like they might be removing them in the future.

Porsche-O-Phile 02-24-2009 01:12 AM

I'm surprised these things haven't mysteriously ended up oh... ya' know... "MIA". Or maybe casualties of unexplained spontaneous combustion?

charleskieffner 02-24-2009 03:39 AM

well andrew thomas county AG just stated he will not go after pic tickets due to un-constitutionality. bill in werks to get rid of pic tics derailed in capitol. score - 1 us. them -1.

AG's wording is that a cop has to "see" you speeding as a camera can not testify against you.

hopefully bill in capitol to get rid of these cameras will gain steam again. i love "brake checks" as someone hauls ass and then sees cameras. lots of accidents attributed to this and ya really got to be on yer toes.

i've been so busy i havent had a chance to drive my p-car and all im waiting for is april and the zone 8 speed festivus in fontuckey/kalif. meanwhile i just go buzzing around at about 10-15mph over and wait for "x" band and "ka" band to buzz and tap the brakes in my truck. its bad every road ya take. tempe/phx/snobbsdale etc. for photo mini vans/bike cops/omar-shariffs(mcso) all taking shots at you with radar or a camera.

as far as tucson road construction. well welcome to the last state in the union to complete its intersate system. and no one had a clue about our insane growth back then when it was completed. I-10 sucks big time no matter what day or time you drive it. hell you really cant drive anywhere without some construction fouling up the werks.

my latest "drama" was this moron sunday morning with g/friend driving south on the 101 when his mattress pad which he failed to tie down in his pick em up came flying out onto freeway bouncing from lane to lane! always something entertaining here to avoid in a pico second.

i know that driving by yourself your a target if hauling ass...................but i would rather have clear air in front of me and nojuan around my sides or rear for a "cushion" in event of road debris sudden lane changes.

in my truck its not so bad, im not breaking the sound barrier. in the p-car it can get real hairy real fast and its best to bring a roll or 2 of toilet paper with some of the interesting items you find dumped on the highway.

While I can sypathize, you'd have been better off ignoring the ticket and then dodging the process server. Writing a letter about it is most certainly acknowledgment of receipt. In fact, even entering your citation number on the website to see the amount due is considered being served. No way out of it once you've been served.

Our crooked govenor here just OK'd them statewide as part of a revenue fix for his failed budget. Woo Hoo!! Can't wait to see how that pans out.. NOT! :(

Why be furious? Why go postal and call them fascist? If you had been caught by an actual officer, would you have had the same reaction... called him a fascist?

If you do the crime, be ready to pay the fine... simple as that.

I'm sure they're laughing at you for threatening to buy everything online or out of state. They know that's not gonna happen unless you live near the border. Groceries? Beer?

Thousands of people are complaining? Really? Imagine that.

What makes you say "it sounds like they might be removing them?"

If a cop had pulled him over, he'd at least have had a chance at discussing it, getting it knocked down or just a warning. With the cameras, you don't always know you've been tagged and you can rack up several tickets in one day and not know about it. In fact, you can get flashed when some other car was speeding and tripped the sensor, but was to your left and the camera on the right only got you. When I've gotten pulled over in the past, whether the stop was justified or not, I was a little more careful for the rest of that day. Not so with the cameras. They cause accidents with the panic braking on the hwy. and are nothing but for raising revenue. Everyone here knows it and it's just a matter of time before they go away. Might as well do it sooner than later.

RWebb 02-24-2009 12:19 PM

revenue enhancement efforts tend to increase when the local govts. need money...

Porsche-O-Phile 02-24-2009 12:34 PM

Agreed.

I feel bad for the men/women in law enforcement. They'll be the ones that have to enact these revenue-generation policies on the front lines and bear the brunt of society's ire for it. Lousy way to be repaid for all the good work they do going after gangbangers and scumbags and thieves, but unfortunately it's a package deal and people are only going to see them "following orders" to bleed the public dry in order to fund the insatiable appetites of bureaucrats devoid of scholarship or vision.

I really do feel for those folks. Crappy situation to be in.

What makes you say "it sounds like they might be removing them?"

To answer your questions:

1. Yes this is "fascist" in my book, they don't even do it in Russia. This country is increasingly become fascist by the day. Don't think that they just take a nice pic of you smiling in your car. They are videotaping around the clock 24/7/365 and you can watch your video on their website. Basically it's like living in a town where they can follow all your moves within the city limits on video, what's not fascist about that? What happened to the constitution?

2. I'm perfectly ok with paying the fine as long as its a cop catching me, no problem there. But an electronic device designed and installed by a private company? How can they prove that it's 100% accurate? When the flash went off I instantly looked at my speedo and I was doing 64mph. The ticket said I was doing 67mph. If the radar was wrong, that would have put me under the 11mph limit and therefore I wouldn't have gotten a ticket. But do you think I can really fight that in court??

3. They can laugh all they want. Since I'm in the top 5% income in this state, people like me and my wife are "stimulating" their economy not the many illegals in this town making $5/hr under the table. You'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes when you spread the word and soon 100 people then maybe 1000 people are doing the same and boycotting the local businesses. We don't eat out, we don't buy clothes at the malls, we order 98% of our groceries online, and most everything else is bought online or ebay (we like getting deals and not paying sales tax). I travel to Cali at least 2x a month and bring back with me extra gas each time so we don't have to fill-up here, etc. So you can laugh all you want, but its the whole principal for me and I will go to extremes not to deal with these fascists.

4. There are many groups already setup in Arizona requesting the removal of these devices. The city of Scottsdale has already removed a couple of them and apparently it's down to 1 senator in AZ, if he loses, all the photo radar in the state will be removed.

http://www.camerafraud.com (1 of the many sites)

Again, you can laugh but sometimes a revolution starts with just a handful of people. Or we can just sit here, forget about the constitution, let all of Wall Street get bailed out, and let the government stick it to us with higher taxes, photo radars, national ID cards and soon RF-ID implemented chips.

Good day!

charleskieffner 02-24-2009 07:50 PM

well if yer gonna call them fascists.....................dont be upset when they call you a "NAZI" for driving a porsche!!!!

with the maricopa AG stating he isnt going after anyone anymore that gets "tagged", i feel its a sure bet that each and every city as well as the state will be held accountable for the hi-buck camera contracts they have signed and soon we will be over this hell on the highway memorex moment.

theres some ser-i-ass bucks in each and everyjuan of those cameras to take the "family portrait" type photos they take.

the "ONLY" dar-dar unit out there that will defeat them is the escort with GPS. the mobile units are just plain freeking EVIL, cuz gps input into escort doesnt werk.

i have to honestly say i have been DAMN LUCKY not getting juan yet , and i imagine my time is coming. i have caught myself just cruising with flow of traffic and the next thing FLASH and you have mass panic and mega red brake lights all of a sudden going off.

one guy here was busted for taking a baseball bat to a couple of the stationary units and beating the poo outta them. god bless him...........he is a true hero in my book!
