Sheesh!
J Rock certainly is not speaking for every 944 owner. You are right pwd, there is no status in a 944, or any other vehicle for that matter. Mine's just a car that goes to the shop less frequently than tons of cars a thousand times it's value.

Wow, a ridiculous car and an occupant losing status! Doesn't much matter which of the past few is in it, it's the same. If I need to delete this in order for it to remain out of PARF, I will.

I loled . I was referring to how every American should respect the President no matter who is in office. All of this President bashing in recent years just tells me people have no respect for where they live.

Ya know there are people that actually drive Porsches (including 944s) because they're just plain fun to drive and are decent looking automobiles, not for any kind of snob factor or to pretend that money is the most important thing in our lives...

944s are a hoot to drive. I could give a rat's ass what kind of financial associations people want to make about my owning one - or anyone else for that matter.

I agree, but I think his point is that people shouldn't piss and moan about buying parts. Keeping an old car, like ours, in shape is kind of the point of owning it. I'm not going to whine when one of my 25 year old parts fails unless it is NLA.

The gas station clerk brought out my normal reaction yesterday.

Him: Wow a Porsche, what year is it?
Me: A 1983
Him: I bet it's expensive.
Me: It's really not.
Him: When did you buy it and how much?
Me: Almost eight years ago, it was only a $2500 car, probably still is.
Him: That cheap? How many miles are on it.
Me: I'll have to guess, near 200K. Odo's been broken for over 11 years.
Him: Damn, must be expensive to keep on the road then, huh?
Me: Not really. Parts aren't free, but they're not that bad, and I do the work.
Him: Right on.
Me: Yep.

I'll confess, I pissed and moaned about having to replace a $12 ignition switch when one shat the bed after a month of service. I guess I'm fortunate though, mine doesn't break on me much.

The last thing that I see as a status symbol is the car that someone drives. Especially since the concept of "leasing" came about.

Also the most important lesson I learned over my lifeitme is , money cant buy class. Some of the biggest douchebags I've met, are the ones with the most money.

A guy pulled up next to me at work.

Him: Damn, what are they paying you to drive a Jag?
Me: You could buy 4 of these for what you paid for your Pathfinder.
Him: What? Really?!

People are stupid. When my wife worked, she didn't get a single comment when we bought her a new 4Runner, $34k sticker price. But everyone had something to say when she pulled up in my 10 year old, $7500 BMW 540i.

Almost universally.

An a-hole with money is still just an a-hole in my book.

It used to be money was the result of success which was the result of being a smart, dedicated and disciplined person. It meant something. Not anymore.

Now it just means a person happened to be dumb lucky. I don't really respect it. Certainly not ostentatious displays of it.

I've been "rich" and I've been "poor". Yea, "rich" is easier but honestly, it's the character of a person that matters, ultimately.

Wouldn't mind being just a little richer right now though, but if I don't get to be I can deal. My 944 is fine.

Turning heads is fun.But it doesn't mean there's any attitude behind it. I drive my 944 because my VW died, and the Porsche was cheap ($1750). I put a few grand into parts, knowing full well that I'd have to! I drive it with a smile now because I know that *I* did it myself. It might not be fast ,or powerful, but it's mine, and I love it. I'd say the same if I drove a Supra, or a Jeep.

And none of us like seeing $400 for a fuel pump. That's why we're smart, and do our research, and get a $120 sensor for $50 because it's from BMW site, or $5 hand-me-downs from fellow Pelicaners!
