I love it when Rosey does this inquisitive thing:

Rosey is a 3-year old pound puppy.

Tess is a stray who showed up about 7 years ago - folks debate whether she's an Australian Shepherd or a Border Collie. Naturally docked tail, flat back - we guess Aussie.

I love all these pictures. Dogs are such a wonderful part of life on earth and we Pelicans have some great dogs. Mine died before his time a little over a year ago, had to put him down because of a crippling disease. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done, miss him like crazy. He went almost everywhere with me. I'm planning on a road trip to Texas one of these days to get a relative of his.

His name was Romeo and he was a long-hair GSD. Here he is on a 7k mile road trip in '07:

Here he is surfing Pelican with me years ago, he did not like all the fighting around here but he would have liked this thread.

Denis, you have a kindered spirit somewhere in L.A. I was there a couple weeks ago...saw a 996 w/ a long hair GSD riding shotgun, looked to see if it was you.

speeder 03-27-2009 09:42 AM

Wish it was me, Jim. The funny thing is that he fit in the 996 perfectly, he'd sit sideways in the passenger seat and lean against the tilted backrest while looking out the window. Or he'd sit in one of the rear buckets w/ his elbows on the center tunnel looking straight ahead between the front seats.

I miss him a lot.

I dearly love my dogs, but they're making it difficult to keep a roof over my family's head (or new a new suspension on the Porsche). Thanks to some sugar free gum and a squirrel, they've cost me over $2k in the last 4 months.

Some sugar free gum contains Xylitol, which can be deadly to dogs. We came home and found the dogs had eaten through my wife's coat pocket (it was zipped) and ate nearly an entire pack of gum. Thankfully, the only part not digested was the little corner that said "Xylitol". My wife had no idea why I was freaking out, but it can send them into insulin shock, kidney failure and ultimately death. We were also watching my father-in-law's dog, so we had no idea which dogs had gotten into the gum. Ended up having to pay for an emergency vist to the vet for all 3. They pumped their stomachs and only Kobe had gum and wrappers in him. They kept him on IV, meds and constant observation for about 36 hours. He's OK now, but the wallet took a hit on that one.

Luna is this very docile and "lazy," fall at your feet dog that, when on her own, will grab a bird out of the air and can apparently catch squirrels. We found the remains of a squirrel tail, last Thursday night. Friday morning she starts throwing up. That night, she's throwing up and has diarrhea. Saturday, there's blood in the vomit and diarrhea. Of course, she waited until our regular vet had closed, so she could enjoy another pampered visit to the ER vet. They came up w/ a $1200+ treatment plan, which I reworked to a $410 "stay off the horse tranquilizers doc" course of action. Long and short of it; they gave her some anti-nausea pills and rehydrated her. She's doing much better now.

Danimal16 05-13-2009 10:20 AM

Josh,

Even in tough times dogs bring good karma. Good luck to you and the family during these times. Someone that commits to a dog like you apparently do has a huge balance in the Karma bank. I love it.

myamoto1 05-13-2009 10:22 AM

Dan - thanks for the karma boost.

Has anyone had any experience with dog health insurance? It's starting to sound more and more appealing to me ;)

TerryH 05-13-2009 10:32 AM

Dogs are great, ain't they? Gum, chocolate, grapes, raisins, and assorted other innocent looking stuff are dog killers. So are nylon stockings/socks as my wifes best friend lost her dog to a nylon sock that had strangled its intestines.

A year ago, the wife was painting our hallway closets and had all the doors open or off. She came to me swearing that our one year old pup had ingested a metal Ace Bandage clip. These are about 1 inch long with 5 sharp claw-like grabbers on each end.

I asked if she saw him eat it and she couldn't be certain... "but I'm pretty sure there were two clips sitting on that shelf and now there's just one." If his previous record was brought to court, he would be found guilty on all counts. ;)

I took the remaining clip and wrapped it in a sock and made the pup lie on top of it out in the backyard grass. I then grabbed my metal detector, ran it over him and the alarm sounded as it found the clip under him. I then removed the sock and clip and retested just him. Silence... and relief.

Saved an expensive trip to the vet or guessing and waiting to see if he would pass it. I knew that detector had some value even though I've never found more than quarter with it. :D

Yesterday was a sad day. We had to put our beloved Shelby down. She had a good run for a Lab -- 13 1/2 years. She was truly a member of the family & she will be missed. She was a GREAT dog.

These pics were taken last year.

I have enjoyed seeing all of the dog pics. I particularly like Tucker & Truman.

Danimal16 05-15-2009 10:01 AM

Doug,

Sorry to hear Shelby is gone.
